Mystery cut out.

  1. #1
My car cut out and died on the M1 last night.
Felt like the fuel pump at first, a case of it bogged down, then just wouldn't give any juice at all. Managed to coast it to the hardshoulder.

Now this morning, Went out there turned the key in the ignition, I CAN hear the fuel pump priming.
Turn the key further, it'll try and start but its just not starting.

Now i've tried having a search on here, but i'm at a loss at to what it could possibly be.
    Any thoughts?

    it's 1.1 for y'all.

is it getting spark? ie; coilpack or crank sensor
  3. #3
I'm narrowing it down to either the map sensor (don't think it's that though)
Looking to find a crank sensor on web atm. No1 near me wants to help me
I again doubt the coilpack but I will check that later on. It's a new coilpack but hey ho.

All electrics running as they should? and have you tried a push start at all?
  5. #5
Process of elimination really. I've since realised it wouldnt be the Map sensor affecting it. It'll run without it.

I'm picking up crank sensor tmoz to see if that works, if not with the new crank sensor, try and get a spark from the coilpack. From that, fuck knows. I'll report back.

In a different thread, I sort of concluded to a bad weather issue. I don't know if this is the case in your area, as it has sort of been wet and windy for over a couple of weeks now.

If you get yourself into the coilpack and plugs, just wipe out and spray with some wd40 then plug back in, see what it does.

Pressed the fuel cut off switch in the engine bay?

If that didn't/doesn't work, check for spark, check for fuel

been busy at work these last few days, no time to fix my car. :/ Had a tinker, swapped the Crank sensor for a new one.
It turns over, but then just ticks if you carry on turning it over.
Really struggling to get my coil pack out. The passenger side bolt holding it in has this annoying sensor on it, thats preventing me from turning it.

I've read a few threads now on the coilpack not getting a spark. So, if I were to get a new coilpack... and no spark, what would be the cause of this? All my earths are in good condition surprisingly.

Right... to update this all :
    Big huge annoying problem.
Our analysis is that the timing belt must have slipped and as a result buggered the engine block up. Bought a quater of an inch gap around the pistons so I was getting no compression. Bent all the rods and shit.
It would turn over but the pistons were all open so no compression and no go.

SO fuck it... time for a new saxo.

Sounds like either a goosed starter,or not enough power to start the car.

have you taken the head off to prove this? sounds rather extreme considering and you'd notice the lack of compression and metal to metal contact of bent rods (considering they've been bent in an engine with the pistons have physically cracked or snapped!)

Doesnt sound like timing slipping? It would surely still run but like a bag of nails, try bumping it?
Remember, you need 3 things for a car to run, air, fuel and a spark. Check all 3 of these things first.
If the cambelt has been running fine for so long, it wouldnt just slip, it would normally either be fine or snap?

If its got piston damage and bent rods then the valves will be scrap too - that wouldnt be turning over any time soon
  14. #14
Yeah, Had the head off of it. Long and short, it's dead. SO time for a new car. VTR anyone?
  15. #15
would like to see the damage internally if you can get pics up? Somes quite an extreme failure for just a slipped belt, at least of the bottom end.
if the car is all good why not shove in a vtr unit?

I'm considering dropping a vtr lump in it.
Just genuinely wandering the approx costs of doing it all. I mean people sell vtr looms, ecu and engines off for around £70... I mean is that a good price for a decent engine? People quoting me £100 for the actual labour itself, again decent price?

Provided I drop a vtr block in there, once the old engine is out I'll strip it down and fully inspect it all. Get pictures from there.

Tbh, was doing around 50mph when it felt like a fuel pump dieing, so I floored it to no avail.I'd thought it slipping at that speed would have done a fair bit of damage.

If you're going to swap the engine you might aswell do it properly and go 16v

I don't think I could handle the extra BHP.
    8V is enough for me...

    vtr will be fine.

Surprised that it failed like that though and there weren't more noises etc!

Fair do's - I regularly shit myself when I press that pedal on the right.
