MOT fail list + how to check clutch

  1. #1
So not used my car for a good 6 months or so, took it for a pre mot so I know what needs doing to get it going again....

It needs; New rear axle (already got a refurb one)
    Top strut bearings
    Offside track rod end
Passengers door needs new lock mechanism
Air bag light won't go out
Hand brake has no reverse travel
I seen to be losing brake fluid
Rust hole in the boot to wheel arch
Drivers seat rocks even though it fully screwd in

Can any one give a very rough price on all this?

Also how do I check for a slipping cluch? It makes a clunking when pedal is pressed but engine is off... So I'm worried the cluch is going too

Drivers seat rocking will be the metal base snapped, my leathers came like that, a local garage charged me £20 to strip the paint, weld it and re paint it. Did it in about 20 minutes and it's as good as new.

Surly the passenger door won't affect the MOT?

taken from a another site.......... test it in a parking lot. With it stopped but running, put the car in 2nd or 3rd gear and let out the clutch. If it does not stall, but the RPMs go up and the vehicle does not move, the clutch is bad and needs to be replaced.

^^^ all doors on all cars now need to be fully operational, in case you need an emergency exit.

not really, depends on how much you could do yourself. Airbag light for instance could just be the pretensioner wire being unplugged.

Get up to 30-40 miles an hour, put in third of fourth and put your foot down. If the revs shoot up but the car is not accelerating then either check the cable and adjust or new clutch needed.

But the door still opens from what he said? Simply that it doesn't lock, does that really fail a MOT?

Well the list of problems is getting bigger and bigger when the cars not even being used,,,

    -Needs new axle
-needs top mount bearings both sides
-needs track rod ends both sides
-drivers door wont open inside or outside
    -drivers seat needs welding
    -airbag light wont go out
-excessive play in rear brake carrier, also losing brake fluid
-hole in the boot needs treating and welding
    -got a slow puncture
    -needs new battery
-clutch is on its way out

So im not sure but im guessing that going to be expensive for a £400 car...do you think i should start looking for a new one?

new axle dependig on year can get 2nd hand from £80 to £200 New looking around £250 upwards

    - Top mount bearings both sides £20 to £30 new for set of 2

    - track rod ends both sides.
CITROEN SAXO VTS VTR 2 WISHBONE ARMS 2 TRACK ROD ENDS 2 ANTI ROLL BAR LINKS £84 new

-drivers door wont open inside or outside

Take the panel off inside if you can get to it and all sections of it if cant remove drivers seat. Find the locking catch for it and take this off, before doing so see if you can look around where the lock is and if central locking to see if any rust. If theirs rust then get some WD40 and spray on it and also in lock. Turn with key and if its locking and un locking then leave in unlocked try pulling leaver from inside while looking to see if it is doing what it is meant to. If its not then remove and manually do.

    -drivers seat needs welding

How much welding is needed to be done to it. Might be best going to scrap yard and looking around to see if they got any in and get a price off them and also a price for the welding job. Without seeing what needs welding cant give a price on it.

    -airbag light wont go out

The usual airbag fault on these is are known to be the plug connections under the seats. The gold connectors get contaminated with silicone residue exuding from the seat foam. A good squirt of electrical contact cleaner soon sorts that out.

If that does not sort the problem out. Have you had your airbag go off due to crash or impact at any point?

-excessive play in rear brake carrier, also losing brake fluid

Well if you know what your looking for you could follow piping for it clean it all off and locate too see where leaks are coming from. If its the nut holding in place the could be lose might need tightening up.

-hole in the boot needs treating and welding
How bigs the hole as you can simply sand down to metal and remove all rust with rust treatment liquid to and then get plate and weld. If small then can get hole filler and smooth and repaint.

    -got a slow puncture

Slow puncher can be fixed at local tire places have a look at some none named or local dealers unlike quick fit or halfords. Ask them to check the tire that has air coming out. Might just need re sealing like mine did cost £10 if it i punctured by something then depending on size of it can be plugged.

    -needs new battery

Batteries don't cost much depending where you buy from. Can cost as little as £30 upwards depending on what type you get.

-clutch is on its way out

Full clutch kit looking £50 upwards again depending on what make type you want.

What you might want to consider nip down to a few scrap yards or make calls to them asking if they have any saxos in same year and model and getting it to get all parts off or asking if they have the parts you need and how old they are or so fort.

Also depends if your cars low mileage and got for low side like you did then might be worth spending the money on it selling on and getting money back for car and parts and then looking at a new one. All depends what you really want to do.

I got my saxo last year no advisers on MOT however needed front brake disc pads rear discs and pads. near side cv boot, cam belt, re timing, oil filter air filter petrol filter, oil change, power steering fluid changing, 2 ABS sensors fixing. Plus am still finding a few bits and just found the alarm is playing up too.

For all the work, new parts above spent less than £500 on and the most expensive part was getting the cam-belt and timing done however I have a machine friend and got everything reduced down in price and even done bits of the work myself as I sort of know me war around a car. If you know your war round a little then best getting guides like I did and done part and then got the garage machine to do the rest of it I couldn't.

Scrap it. No way is that worth saving

Just bare in mind that tyre place won't repair the tyre if the puncture is on the outside edge,a rust hole needs to be welded to meet mot standards.

Don't try and read my mind as there's nothing in there.

I would not bother, not financially viable and when I read this:

    Means it's rotten.

Its a 1.1. So i mite just keep it and slowly get it fixd ready for my sis to pass her test. The underside is solid no rot and the engine is sound. ive repaced so many parts on it it seems a shame to just scrap it and its my first car. would be sad to see it go!!
