vts starts then dies - CAR NOW RUNS!

  1. #1
For some reason the car would fire up but then die straight away, though would last a second or so longer with a spray of easy start

Car was mapped yesterday after having a full service. Afterwards, decided just to check the spark plugs to see what con they were in as they were new. They were a bit black. Anyway put them back in and the coilpack on and then wouldn't start

Would have started every time prior to this. The fuel pump primes and got a new coilpack but still same problem.

    Any ideas, cheers

EDIT - took inlet off, injectors are spraying fuel, plugs are sparking as runs on easy start, and obv getting air, stumped!

Sooty black plugs means a fueling problem, possibly caused by a faulty lambda sensor or a blocked air filter.
  3. #3
The plugs were put in before the map, and fueling issue was corrected by the map, that's why I took them out to clean them. Literally just removed coil pack and plugs, then put them back in, and voila...it doesn't start :/
  4. #4
    Anyone?
  5. #5
I've only ever had this with a low battery, could be an earthing problem on the coilpack though if you've disturbed it. Clean the coilpack and try again
  6. #6
The car seems to be getting a spark, as it runs on easy start. It possibly be a fuelling issue?
  7. #7
Fuel rail is getting fuel, but not letting any into the injectors?
  8. #8
    got power to the injectors?

if it ran fine yesterday, and you haven't swapped any pipes about, wont be anything mechanical I doubt, most likely electrical.
  9. #9
Where would sensors, relays etc be that you would check? Or if the injectors are getting power? As say it starts then just dies straight away.
  10. #10
Sensors on throttle body click a few times after the engine fires then dies out?
  11. #11
so do the injectors get power properly?
  12. #12
That's what I'm saying, how would u check that? Need to get a multimeter or anything?

Would it be anything to do with the tp sensor, idv sensor or map sensor?
  13. #13
Take an injector out and try start the engine with it plugged in. You'll quickly see if they're working
  14. #14
mine did this after i stalled it, i would start up then seem like it wouldnt idle properly and just die straight away, so i started it up with the throttle half way depressed then it started up fine, weird solution but cant harm in trying in it.
  15. #15
Mine did this.. I took the rail off and 2 injector clips had come off. Put it all back together and it worked.

Most likely knocked the injector loom or something simple

Right well I haven't been working at the car as it was up at my mates work and he's been trying to figure out what's wrongs.

Haven't actually had a look at the injectors yet, needa get the inlet off. Know that fuel is getting to the rail though. So needa check injectors tomorrow. Could it be anything to do with the feul injection relay?

Cheers for the help so far folks

Right got the inlet off and removed the fuel rail and injectors. When the car is tried to be started, all the injectorrs spray petrol. It still is firing then cutting out?
  18. #18
how about this, how much fuel is in it...
  19. #19
It was lowish, but had put some more in and there's contstant spray from injectors. As said it fires up then dies, surely it wouldn't start if there was no fuel? I'll fill it up a good bit tomorrow for good measure

It wouldn't be anything to do with standard ecu being mapped, igniiton advanced etc?

Outside chance this idea, but whip the fuel pump out & give it a gentle tap then replace back in the car.
  21. #21
Right my mate wired up the diagnostics and started the car because no faults were showing.

    Now shows;

    Map sensor
    Tps
    Air temp sensor

These be a reason why its not starting I presume?
  22. #22
Anyone, in regards to the faults?
  23. #23
Out of those faults I would say the air temp sensor is the culprit.
  24. #24
For they three faults to appear just from taking the spark plugs out my guess is still an earthing issue/you've damaged the loom
  25. #25
Changed map sensor an air temp sensor, no luck

Fuel system 1 - open loop fault. Anyone know what this could mean?

Could it maybe the fpr not holding pressure in the rail?

    Cheers

    Car now runs!

Found out the problem after getting a new coilpack, map sensor and air temp senser lol

It was that the cylinders were dry, so when the fuel was getting injected from the injectors, it was getting burned up too quickly hence dying.

A bit of petrol in where the injectors go, and voila..it now runs. So hopefully this will help some people who are in the same predicament as me.

So thanks lads for your help, and hopefully no more bother with the saxo for a long time lol

Check Crankshaft Sensor, had this problem on my mates 16v Quiksilver! would start then die, or not start at all!
