Starter Motor Grinding?

  1. #1
    Hi,

Recently replaced the engine with another engine I had after dropping a few valves changed the engine and after connecting it all up I get a grinding noise when cranking...

I bought a second hand one in working condition tried this same again grinding... The car starts and runs nice and smooth but the noise from starting is horrendous, are there two different flywheels (early and late models) in terms of teeth number (I know the clutches mount differently) and they're not meshing correctly?

The flywheel on the new engine didn't appear to have missing teeth or be damaged, but I didn't survery it for damage, never thought.

This is on a 106 GTi, starter motor never caused me a problem before or stuck before...

    Any suggestions welcome

Check the teeth on the starter & make sure it's correctly lined up & not missing any dowels or bolts.

Got all 3 bolts in, and the dowels in swapped it between starters, gears look good no damage

Just an update for future reference, I replaced the flywheel with my original flywheel and this solved the problem, would appear I was supplied a 180mm flywheel with incorrect spacing/offset not allowing the teeth to mesh correctly.

Flywheel swapped, 200mm clutch on all back together starts almost instantly and no grinding.

I'm assuming the flywheel is a 1.4/1.1 flywheel.
