I'm not too clued up on Ice but I would say it sounds to me like your picking up interference from the engine bay.
Firstly if you have any amps or subs then make sure you have a good earth and make sure the cables are running seep rat from one another or try an box that helps with the interference, can't remember what there called lol sorry. Hope this helps.

Are you sure it's not just your engine you can hear? They tend to make a noise..

    Your stereo threw your speakers?

    That's a first...

Tbf on my mums KA, when I have my phone plugged in through AUX and my phone is on charge through the cig lighter, there is a faint whining noise that goes with the revs of the engine, it gets louder as the revs build, but as soon as I unplug my phone from charging it goes...
Not sure if yours is a similar problem but I have experienced something similar

    Ignition coil suppressor.

Decent earth's are the key here. Are you running an amp to power the speakers or are they powered from the head unit? If from an amp, make sure the RCA cables don't go near the power cables for the amp. If from the head unit, make sure the earth is nice and clean, and connected properly.

If that doesn't solve it you need a ground loop isolater to stop the alternator whine etc.

considering its been turbo'd there a good chance its had some wiring mods done to the loom and the suppressor capacitor cut off

As already mentioned. Ground loop isolator of your speakers are amped. Get them from Halford or maplin for a few quid.

Are you running an amplifier for ANY speakers or subwoofer?

    Yea

You need to run an interference suppressor through the live lead of your stereo.

Then you need a ground loop isolator. Put it between the Rca cable and your amp. If you don't know what one is then have a Google. Also, clean up and coppergrease / white grease your amp earths.

Your problem is a result of interference, probably due to poor routing of Rca and amp power cables, and or bad earthing.

But I've checked every connection and it's all set up right but when I pulled out the engine loom and re fitted it there was a wire from the head to the neutral terminal which is not on any other vts lump I have. So haven't connected it back up

    Is that the fault ??

That's the name I was looking for from my first post.
Try this first as this is a good 90percent chance it's that if not then check your earth and make sure you've ran the cables away from one another.
Will prob be picking up interference from the alternator at a guess.
    Hope this helps

Then replace the suppressor which should bolt to the coilpack bolt on the 8v's and the side of the head on 16v's... I think you answered your own question.

    Like to think so lol
