Important! : Torsion Bar..

  1. #1
My car has now been sat for 2 weeks.. I'm stuck for ideas.

My car was put on the bump stops by the last owner, which now won't pass an MOT because of that reason.. Tried getting the torsion bars out, but they are stuck solid.. Had a sliding hammer on them, the bolt and socket method, all with no success..

Anyone got any ideas how to unseize them at all? The only idea i have, is to make some kind of bag up, that goes over the end of the torsion bar, and fill it with coca-cola.. See if it will corrode away, some of the corrosion..

Any help appreciated.. The car is to be sold after an MOT, so a new axle is out of the question really.. Not spending £270 on a new axle, to sell the car for £1000...

soak in wd40, wrap with a rag then soak again with wd40, leave that overnight.

    Worst case scenario, blowtorch.

you tried the lump hammer method ie: bashing the torsion bar in using a bolt head screwed in as the face to hit it with. Should just pop out the other side (just like haynes say fitting is the reversal of removing!)

Also plusgas knocks the socks off WD40, try some of that

I've used a full can of WD-40 soaking the bastard, coke can strip anything.. So that was the theory in my idea!

Ah, so the bar can come out the other side? I was under the assumption they only come out 1 way?

the bar can come out both ways

and can you not just chop an inch off the bumpstop so its not sat on them?

I ended up using extreme methods with mine and using an air chisel on the end of the bar. Not the best way to do it but it worked...

Bar and hammer method will work you just havto keep going at it it will give in in the end, I wouldn't put a bolt in the end though coz u might bugger the threads in the bar or end up with a snapped bolt inside it, just put a washer or something inbetween to avoid too much damage to the end and keep checking for movement every few hits. When you do get them out whack a load of grease on the splines for any future adjustments.

Plus gas mate use that,wd40 is just a lubricant.

Ahh, i'll give it a go at smashing them out of the other end then! I thought about trimming the bump stop, but i think 1, they may notice.. 2. if it's already sat on them, and i lob and inch off, it might still be sat on them haha
