Important! : VTR is revving by itself!

Hey guys, went to start my car the other day, was very sluggish to turn on (turns out i needed a new alternator but got that sorted and battery charged) but once i turned it on it was revving at 3-4k RPM all by itself. Replaced a few sensors and things and it's still doing it! any ideas what cuold be wrong? Need to try and get the car sorted asap cause i need it for uni on monday

Could possibly be the idle control valve but could be wrong

Already been changed. But thank you

    Anymore suggestions welcome!

    Things that have been changed:
    - coil pack
    - throttle positioning sensor
    - idle control sensor
    - airflow sensor
    - and some other wee sensor on top on the coil (no idea what it does, but it was changed anyway just to see and no change)

    Crank sensor? Temperature sensor?

That's something that may be worth a try I suppose. Thank you

I had this after I recharged my battery, it stopped on its own after a while, but I had to drive it around the block a few times like that.

I'm too scared to drive it in case it blows something!

When you let the clutch to bite point the revs will drop down, after 5 minutes of driving on and off the clutch every so often mine was back to a normal idle.

Just be careful if you do, it will drive itself!!

My cousin who is a mechanic drove it earlier today and said it didn't sound good at all, he is advising against it. HE said it sounded like a WRC car, and not in a good way! lol

unlikely but check the throttle cable as if sticking or not running free can cause this issue

It is easy to check its running free and the throttle is moving as it should

Guess it has already been looked at ?

Sounds like your issue could be a bit worse than mine. Hope you get it sorted

Switch the ignition on/off 6 times without starting the car(sets up the icv)if that doesn`t work unplug the battery for 1/2 an hr(resets the ecu)

These cars rev up when the battery charge is down in order to compensate. Have it checked so it shows 12.2 volts and 14.4 when running, plus that it has as many amps as it says on it.

that does not tell much, it could be for a number of reasons.

Will give these things a go. Really hoping it's not an ecu problem... just after having the ecu refurbished back in November cause it shat itself the night before its MOT.

    actually, throttle cable is perfect.

and battery was disconnected to charge for long enough while i was away sourcing an alternator yesterday ... was still revving high when new alternator and fully charged battery went in

I sold my car to a guy who had this problem, was majorly pissed as you can imagine. I did a lot of research and tried all the possible things with no luck. Turned out the manifold was loose because I'm a twat, worth checking that before you throw any money at it!

Have you cleared any error codes with a laptop?

Turn your key to on position wait 10 seconds then turn it off, then turn it back to the on position again 6 times.. Then drive 10 miles or something like that. To reset the ecu. Mite not work but its worth a try

have changes the coil pack twice and every sensor in the bloody thing twice to see. still nothing! The old lady is giving up on me

have tried the ignition thing. worked for like 30 seconds and then started revving at 4k by itself again... never drove it though... too scared to, could it not cause a lot of damage?

will check the manifold thing. ya never know

Thanks guys... will try and keep you updated
