Sorting out the rust

    Car went through its MOT the other week and came back with advisories on rusty sills and rusty boot floor. I'm going to sort it out today and tomorrow, I've bought a load of stuff for it after doing a bit of research online but hoping someone can give me the proper steps. This is my plan, if I'm doing something wrong or people have other advice please let me know.

    1. Wire brush the rust back to the metal
    2. Zinc 182 spray on the metal
    3. Paint on red oxide using a brush
    4. Acid 8 (upol) etch primer sprayed on
    5. Stonechip sprayed on

    I'm not sure if I need to put the red oxide and the acid 8 on, as they are both etch primer, and will the acid 8 spray properly over the red oxide that has been brushed on? Also will it need underseal over the top of the Stonechip?

    you wont need 3 or 4 given you start with 2! stick a good few coats of colour over the primer and that's all you need.

    if the stonechip stuff you are thinking of is schultz, just dont, its horrible shite, and IMO screams "I'm hiding rusty shite"

    boot floor wont need any stone chip protection, though its a good idea to remove any loose seam sealant and re-do it, the sills and inner arches etc had a rubberised coating applied before the final colour coats.

    So I don't need to use the red oxide or the acid 8, I can just spray normal primer over the zinc, then spray a few coats of regular body paint on top? And with the sills and wheel arches, do I spray the stone chip over the top of that? Would underseal over the Stonechip be worth doing?

    It's hammerite stone chip.

    Clean up the rust back to shiny metal,then apply phospheric acid to it(on ebay)this turns the metal too black.Then a coat of red oxide & job done.

    Any need for underseal on boot floor, sills or arches?

    Normal underseal traps moisture.

    After several hours going at it with a wire brush attachment in a drill, it still looks like this. There are some small bits that's have gone back to shiny metal, but the majority hasn't.



    I think the drill isn't powerful enough to brush all the rusty metal off. Do I need an angle grinder with wire brush attachment to get it all the way back to shiny metal? Is there some kind of acid I can put on it that will make it easier? Cheers

    No mate no acid that I know of,only the phospheric acid that I linked to which after wire brushing the metal you apply.The section you`ve done looks fine ,once you`ve got the rest looking like that apply the acid.

    Ok thanks mate, I was hoping that it would be ok to start applying the acid with it like that otherwise I'd be going at it for days! I thought that it could be ok as the bit that I have done is smooth and the metal is solid, it's just a sort of shiny brown colour, so I thought it might need to be brushed all the way back until it's shiny silver. I'll upload a pic of the other side so you can see what it started like and what I'm dealing with here!

    This is the other side of the boot floor that I haven't started on yet. When I first started the other bit it was so rotten I thought it's not even worth trying with the wire brush. After a while though all the crust came off and there was solid metal underneath. And this is on an 03 plate saxo by the way, is it just me or is this rust pretty bad for a late saxo?

    Are you sure its not just flaky underseal?

    It could be to be honest, as you can tell I'm not exactly a skilled bodyshop technician. As I said the mot had an advisory for it so I assumed it was all rust. There was quite a lot of surface rust above where the exhaust sits, but that went back to shiny-ish metal comparatively easily, although some bits do still have small bubbly browns bits on it.

    there is no underseal on the boot floors.

    Id be taking the ecu fuse box and arch liners out to see whats lerking under there. Mines a 53reg had to get bit of welding done there. Rest of the car is really clean though. Check where the boot floor meets the arch aswell my old vtr went there.

    Get oxide paper on the rusted section,then the drill with a wire brush attachment.

    Wire brush the flaky bit off.
    Brush on some rust killer. Like Hammerite kurust.
    Some zinc or red oxide primer.
    Stonechip.
    Hammerite smooth brushed on in the colour of your car.
    And it'll be protected for years.
    What I did to mine cause it's a black car is spray on engine oil to the stone chip.
    The stone chip absorbs the oil. Giving it a layer of protection that doesn't dry so keep the moisture out.

    Edited my post higher up (post #7) as I accidentally deleted the photo of the part I've wire brushed, but I've put the photo back now. Can peoplw confirm that patch would be ready for some rust killer then red oxide? Or does it need to be brushed back more?

    can you not buy spray paint in halford for rust, think its black you just spray it straight onto rust, was lookin at it few weeks ago
