Important! : Head gasket thickness on a 1.4 Furio?

  1. #1
    Hi,

Replacing the head gasket due to gases getting into the coolant. The coolant must have become acidic or something because the gasket was rotted and there was a lot of pitting on the cylinder head surface, when I got it skimmed they took 0.3mm off.

I just wondered how thick a standard Furio head gasket is, because nobody in the parts shops seem to know! Obviously I can't buy a new gasket if I don't know how thick the standard size is (and therefore can add 0.3 to that)

The machine shop also said they didn't think they would be able to take any more off the head, but there was still some pitting left on it, though none near the edges of the cylinders or any holes. Will it be ok?

How many notches are on the old gasket? (situated just under the thermostat housing, or that side of the head).

Well, theres 4 notches, 1 at the top and then 3 together below. Here's a picture, if it will link

Pretty big gouge out of that one right!

Thing I don't get is how all new HG's seem to have about 9 holes, just been having a conversation with somebody from Citroen over the phone who didn't seem to understand why mine isn't like this

You'd probably be better off buying a secondhand head if the old one is too corroded. Lack of coolant changes usually cause that to happen

Hmm. I cant seem to find what i was looking for. Same reason as citroen.

Your best bet is to speak to your local motor factors, tell them how many notches you've got and how much has been skimmed.

I've fitted original thickness gaskets after a skim and never had a problem.

yeah, the old owner told me the car 'drives perfectly well and is in good condition, the only problem it has is the temperature warning light won't go off' I looked in it and the coolant was half empty, stagnant water.. Saying that, it has actually lasted for two years since with no problems.

What would be the cost of a new head? I don't have too much to spend if it is pretty likely to be alright, the machine shop guys seemed to think it was alright, as I say no pitting near any holes, there's just 3 small pits. But I do want to be fairly sure

    KrisB,

the local places don't seem to be a lot of help either as they all only stock the original size anyway.

Hmm, I guess if you had no problems using an original thickness gasket after a skim, I might just do the same, can you remember how much it was that you had off though?

Can get a full engine for about 40 quid or a vtr engine for the same money. Got some pics of the head face?

    Really? that's some good prices.

Yeah I do, if this link works, this is the only picture I have (taken to get the numbers on the side so it only shows part of the head) but what you're seeing is the worst of 3 pits.

What I'm hoping is that the gasket sealant will fill that in a bit, and prevent it getting any worse. Maybe coolant under pressure could seep into that pit, but it looks fairly far to make a connection with the cylinder. If it would be alright for at least a year or so then it would be beneficial for me to just use it for now as I'm skint and on a bit of a time constraint

damn, the links I'm using are a bit hit and miss.

Basically the worst of the three pits is located about 3-4mm away from a coolant tube, and is slightly closer to the cylinder than said coolant tube

    Yeah link doesn't work here
