bit of a problem

  1. #1
Just went out and a horrible sound was coming from the rear right wheel, I recently put some vtr alloys on and from having a brief look (it was dark) im guessing the tyre itself which come on the alloy is rubbing against either the axle or the break pad.
Putting vtr alloys on my desire wouldnt need spacers would they? They are the same size 185/55/14 as my steels.
    Any help here?
    Thanks in advance

Had you driven the car before with the alloys on? Or was this the first time you took the car out after fitting the wheels?

I'm not clued up on vtr alloys and flat arches but if its a rubbing sound I'd get the wheel off and see where its scrubbing..

I put them on saturday morning and have driven on them since, just started doing it this evening, havent hit anything or kerbed it etc...

Get a torch under and check the gap from the tyre to arch wall.

I dont know what tyres people run on VTR wheels. Worst case is, camber - beam.

Strange. I can't really help you further I'm afraid.

Could maybe try explaining the noise further, what sort of noise, if it's constant etc and see if anyone else knows.

But I'd definitely take the wheel off and check the tyre to see where/if its making contact with the body.

Like Prickle said, if the beam is shot, that could also be the cause

    Has the rear been lowered?

I have this which i was told is the rear beam is going but it ran fine on my steels, and also i was told its not an mot failure from the garage. I just took it out again and didnt hearbthe sound at all, note there was somebody in the back when the noise occurred. I had been driving in it wit just me and a passenger in all afternoon, then that sound only started when there was a third person.
Edit: this picture was taken with the steels on, before i put the alloys on.[URL=http://s892.photobucket.com/user/connorberesford/media/IMG_20140117_130842_zpsyymgmni4.jpg.html][/URL

Jack it up and check for play. If it wobbly replace as soon as pos. Another pointer is wear on the tyres. Is it all equal tread inner to outer of the tyre? or more wear on the inner side?

    Hope this helps.

Just been out to have aner look, looking from underneath the car everything seems to be identical both sides, but i just seen how much i could get my hand over the tyre while it is still on the car. The left side which isnt the side with the problem i could get my hand right round and touch the rim on the inside of the alloy, whereas the side woth the problem i can barely get to the middle of the fingers before them rubbing on the inside of the arch, let alone a hand. Im thinking its probably the camber/rear beam again, so this seems to be a bit more of a problem than just 'not being an mot failure'.
Its weird because this didnt happen when i had my steelies on, which according to the tyre are exactly the same siZe, weird.

could it be the rear torsion bar is out and needs adjustment? I was watching vids on youtube about torsion bars to try get my head around it as I'm new in the game with them and one of the vids showed adjusting one as one side was up a few mm higher than the other?

If they haven't been messed with before then the torsion bars won't need re adjusting as theywouldn't have moved

Rear beam gone can be an MOT failure, after a while the trailing arms can become very very wobbly and you can feel it whilst driving, its definitely not safe to drive! Looks like rear wheels are gone anyway! And also just because the wheels are the same size doesn't mean the offset is the same on both rims so they can be same size but one might rub and the other not

Really? You can't have had the standard steelies on then. Standard steelies are 13 inch rims. VTR alloys are at least 1 inch bigger in terms of rim size. The VTR rims are also a fair bit wider than the steelies.

As said before, what sort of noise is it? knocking? rubbing? banging? If it only occurs with extra weight in the car (i.e. someone sitting in the back or bootful of kit) that would point to it scrubbing somewhere. Does it only occur in a staright line/round a corner? etc etc.

Right another update, the tires on the steelies were acually 165/55/14 whereas the ones on the alloys are 155/55/14.
Would this offer any explanation to the rubbing?
    Cheers
  16. #16
The tyres that should be on the vtr rims should be 185/55/14

Not trying to sound patronising, but are you sure they are vtr alloys? And sure that's what it says on the tyres?
  17. #17
Eh no, that'd mean the tyres on the vtr wheels are thinner = more clearance.

Standard VTR tyre should be 185/55/14 = are you sure you haven't misread it?
  18. #18
Sorry i have a 1.1 desire not a vtr just to clarify
  19. #19
Yes, you might have a desire, but you've said yourself you put vtr alloys on?
  20. #20
Oh sorry much have typed the wrong thing. Yes the are 185/55/14. Sorry about that.
  21. #21
i have a 1.1 forte and will be putting vtr alloys on mine same tyres 185/55/14 when i get 2 tyres....mines standard hope i wont have the same problem :/
  22. #22
As long as your rear beam hasnt gone like mine youll be fine.
  23. #23
ahhh ryt did ur standard wheel nuts fit ok on the vtr wheels?
  24. #24
when I had a desire I put VTR alloys on, was fine when nobody was in the back, but rubbed when I put people in the back, sold the car to a mechanic and he checked the rear beam before buying as he said it was a common fault, and said it was fine, so I wouldn't say your beam is gone just yet,
  25. #25
The weel nuts fit fine yeah, ive got the ones that come with the alloys that im putting on tomorrow
  26. #26
Definitely do not use those tapered bolts for steelies on vtr wheels
  27. #27
Hmm just a thought, I once stuck 14 inch swallows on my friends 106 independance. This failed the mot without spacers as it didnt have adequate gap between the tyre and the inner arch. Think they are same profile as vtr wheels (swallows = dturbo standard wheels) that being said your axle looks exactly like my old vtrs which is currently living on my drive due to the axle being that bad. So i would definitely get that changed to be honest. Not sure if it is 'plug and play' but somone is selling a gti axle on facebook for 60 quid lowered 40mm i think. You will most likely need the MC and handbrake cables tho. Otherwise stick to a 1.1 axle and get it changed bud as it aint safe. Also if you want the vtr wheels to fit nicely, ide advise 15mm hubcentric spacers. Will look good too

will i need to get some vtr wheel bolts? i only have the ones what came on my 1.1 13' wheels
  29. #29
I think you need flat seated bolts with vtr mate but I could be mistaken. And longer too if your going for spacers.

Yeah I noticed vtr are flat seated bolts....just want them to fit straight on lol
