whirring noise from front drivers side wheel

I have a citroen saxo desire and just recently a loud whirring noise has started coming from the drivers side front wheel...its louder than the engine.......after checking said tyre I discovered a nail in it which was causing a slow puncture..I changed it for the spare, made sure the tyre pressure was correct but the whirring noise continued.......could this be a tyre imbalance as the spare tyre was a different make to the 4 original tyres..or are the bearings going...there doesn't appear to be any play when I try moving the wheel from side to side wheñ I its jacked up.....anyone got any advice?

Tyre imbalance would shake the steering gently at higher speed.

Drive shaft would rattle under acceleration around a bend.

Gently press the brakes whilst the noise is being made, if you do gently and the noise stays sane should rule out the brakes.

Probably a wheel bearing though to be honest going off what you say, does it get louder as you accelerate?

Sounds like bearings does it get louder faster you go ? And just double check there's nothing catching the tyre or wheel.

Loose wheel arch liner? Check the brake house isn't fouling too! Good point Danny.

Yes it does get louder as I accelerate and lessens as I slow down......cant see any obstructions in the wheel arch/housing..steering is fine and no other knocks or judders/rattles whilst driving

Have you only just noticed it when you found the nail in your tyre or did it start quietly a while ago?

started a little while ago...quietly at first...but louder than the engine now...sounds ok until I get up to about 40mph then gets louder...had wheel bearings go on me before on other cars but don't remember any sort of loud whirring noises

Probably the bearing. Always worth getting noises sorted when they're quiet!
