Engine getting louder

I got a Y reg desire 1.1 .. I bought it in October and it had done 81k miles. Ever since I bought it the engine just seems to get louder and more ratterly.. It's now on 96k miles

Is the exhaust on its way out?

The loudness is coming from the engine bay.. Exhaust looks pretty new. From behind the car sounds fine but from front it's horrible

Get a friend to block the tail pipe as you listen to a blowing noise from it escaping. could be something else though. Serviced recently?

No I've never serviced it.. But I do think it's time

15k is what you've done and you don't know how long before you got it when it was last serviced? Could be an idea as to why it has gotten worse lol

It could be the manifold or down pipe.

Does it just sound more "tractory"?

Rattly and lower from the engine bay, manifold area is what I was thinking.

If someone puts their hands over the tail pipe it will make it easier to hear if it's from the front end of the exhaust.

Have you checked the oil level?

so you racked up 15.000 miles in 4-5 months and don't have a clue if it was serviced or not.

Go to a garage and ask for a full service then, I'll bet a henry the oil is shot to begin with. There are no stupid questions, but then there's not doing the maintenance on a car and wondering why it sounds rough.

quick tip: do the cambelt/waterpump before the car dies.

I dont understand why people dont change the oil in a basic car like this themselves, you can do it for under £20!

Post a video up of the sound(before the engine dies)

Valve clearance, alternator bearings, release bearing? Get a video up and it should help.

As said though get it serviced!!

+ 1 on servicing yourself, never owned a car before a saxo, and not really mechanically minded, but you can very easily do a oil, fuel filter, air filter and spark plugs yourself on a saxo with a little help from a Haynes manual. For under £40 as well, as a pose to the £170 the garage down the road wanted from me.

Full service and tappets need adjusting.
