I have recently fitted a new back box to my exhaust as my last one fell off due to rust decay. the exhaust is a different shape and slightly smaller as the last one was a cherry bomb (bought it with the car) everything has been fitted tightly but its making a strange rattle noise now but when I stop to check everything seems in place what could this noise be? Thanks

#2A stone in the exhaust pipe?

#3im guessing you had a whole new centre pipe too, could be the centre hitting the heat shield?
-
#4Could be a loose heat shield
-
#5Kept the same centre pipe literally just changed the backbox which matches the diameter etc. Everytime I check if the new backbox is fit correctly its nice and steady everytime making it hard to diagnose the problem
-
#6Check the box when the car has warmed up(things expand)
-
#7Am I right in thinking the heat shield is pretty much under wear the front seats are? Because that is where it sounds like its coming from I just cant link that to the new back box isnt it two separate parts of the exhaust I havnt altered any part of the pipe other than the tail end

#8Well working from the back end,you have the back box followed by the centre section.Moving up to the downpipe(cat in manifold)

#10Yeah thaught so well it could be that then ill have a look another possibility is maybe something baffling loose inside the back box As its second hand ill have look thanks for the advice everyone

#11I have had it where the car has been in the air and the back box has been fitting fine only to find once the car is back on its wheels the loop over the axel is touching the axel
but by the sound of your rattle is only a heat shield

#12The thing is I have to work long shifts and cannot do anything about it until monday will it be safe to drive til then?
-
#13Have you checked to make sure the centre section is not knocking on the gear selector, you may have just knocked the centre section when fitting the backbox resulting in the gear selector touching the exhaust.

#14No I havnt its been a few days now and whats strange is that it has stopped doing it now. I tried to show my mate who fit the backbox and when I drove round in an attempt to get that noise to return I was embarrassed by the fact that it just didnt lol so what could it have been?
