saxo wheel bearing?

I think i might have a wheel bearing to go out, what are the signs and how do i find out what wheel it is? thanks

jack car up on which ever side its going on, hold wheel at 9oclock and 3oclock and wobble it, if it moves bearing has gone, if it doesnt bearing is fine. Can you hear a constant humming while driving?
  3. #3
As above, you should hear a constant droning noise whilst driving,it may change pitch when you turn etc.

thanks great explanation. i can hear a constant noise but dont know how to describe it, someone described it has wub wub wub wub wub thats the closest i can think of.

could it be a wheel balancing issuse?, i dont think i have any weights on any of the heels.

    wheels
  7. #7
Balance issue will give a slight wobble through the steering wheel when you get up towards motorway speeds

A wheel bearing should move 9 oclock to 3 and 12 to 6.

Usually you get a vibration through the steering at roughly 55-60mph but no droning noises etc.......

So I'd say no......sounds more than likely that its a gubbed wheel bearing.

I have one for £15 delivered but I'd need to make sure that it fits yours,I bought it for mine but it was the wrong one.......iirc this one is for non tapered driveshafts but then again it might be the other way round.

jacked it up and the wheel is solid when rocking wheel back and forth at 9oclock and 3oclock, so not sure what it is i get slight vibration through the steering wheel at 70mph+. any ideas?

Wheel balance, is there balancing weights on your wheels?
  12. #12
Yep wheel balancing is my shout
  13. #13
no weights on any of the wheels, i need a new front left tyre so when i go to get one i can ask them to balance all the wheels. what you think it will be cost wise for a new front left tyre and balance all the wheels?
  14. #14
If you can feel it through the wheel it'll be the fronts need balancing. He'll do the wheel when he puts a new tire on so you might aswell see what its like after he does that first

I paid £30 for wheel balancing.

needed a new tyre as front left was nearly bald so had it done, while the garage was doing it found out for the first time in 9 months my front tyres are smaller than the rears lol, could that be the cause of the noise?

Only certain garages can do the balancing on my VTR alloys. (some don't have the adaptor for balancing alloys with no centre hole)

BTW, if the rear wheels are not balanced, this can cause vibration throughout the car, whereas front wheels can cause wobbles with the steering at various speeds.

yeah garage said couldnt do it as the car has solid centers.

Pulling the wheel side to side won't tell you if the bearing is gone.

Maybe on the old tapered type. Not on the pressed type. Or is quite rare.

Jack it up and spin the wheel. Your listening for a grinding noise. It'll be obvoius if the bearing has had it as soon as you spin the wheel.

Little tip to tell which wheel it is.
Once you are up to speed where it starts to drone. Turn sharp right/left round a round about. (Should start to drone at 30mph)
    It'll get a lot louder.
If it gets louder when you turn right it's the left
    And vice versa.

thanks, but i would not describe it as a droning noise and its a constant noise at all speeds, starting to think maybe its a cv joint.

Cv joint is more of a clunking noise and is more noticeable when turning, next time you're in the car turn the steering from lock to lock and see if you get this clunking noise,a truly fucked cv joint would give you a noise at all times but usually its only when turning.......
