wobbly engine! help please. *Update*

    Hey guys

Ok, my engine is very jerky, by this i meen when accelerating then letting off you can feel the whole car jerk, its also affecting the gear selector rods, causing the gear stick to jerk and vibrate quite badly, the vibration is in 2nd and 4th

but when under the bonnet rocking the engine their doesnt appear to be a huge amount of movement :/

Now ive changed the lower engine/gearbox mount but its no better

    any suggestions guys?

Do i need to change a different mount or something?

    thanks, karl.

    I had a similar problem.

Im not meaning to worry you or anything like that as it might not be the same...

Mine was getting really jumpy, as in throw you around the car, then one day the whole engine fell out doing 60 on the motorway.... Apparently the gearbox mounting bolts or something had snapped due to manufacture error or something? so i was told anyway...

To the op check the other 2 mounts & that you`ve done the gearbox mount bolts properly.Or that the bolts haven`t sheared,
  4. #4
Have you tried turning it on and off?
  5. #5
    Shut up John haha

all bolts are tight, was like this before hand hence why i changed it but its made no difference and trust me the bolts were tight when i removed the old one haha

Its just so annoying, especialy when giving it some etc

Gearbox mount, easy and cheap to swap half hours job. Check the other engine mount too, bolt can snap in the middle of that too

Andy says check the bolt under the ecu side mount. What bolts the buffer thing to the mount
  8. #8
I'm sure there's a bolt with a hex/star head that secures the buffer to the mount. Mine was ripped am with no rubber left on it so I replaced it, but with a poweflex lower mount on it doesn't seem to do too much anyway

Im guessing you meen the upper one as ive just done the lower...

John, i will check that at the weekend.

Yeah the upper one, it's like a rubber cone. That said the plate this bolts to can't snap off the mounts on the box casing so then it's box casing/rebuild time or a new box realistically

    What gandi said karl.

    Will get on it

    thanks alot guys

Check the upper engine mount too. Just undo the two 13mm bolts... If half the mount comes out then that's your problem and you can figure from there. If you can't remove it without the two 13mm bolts then it's fine.

Basically, on that mount, the engine hangs off just one 8mm thick bolt.

Thanks again pal, looks like another bury weekend on the saxo

Ok so i checked the other mounts today...

    engine (near ecu) is fine

gearbox upper well im unsure, the metal sleave inside the rubber is abit "free"... not realy sure how to tell if its fucked tbh :/

    anyone

Oh and the gearbox nearly fell out! My mistake like AND i managed to thread one of the 13mm bolts for the g.box mount so will have to get a longer one and a nut tomorow to secure that. Nightmare!

Did you remove it and check the M8 bolt on the bottom of it though?

That gearbox mount thread could probably be sorted by running a tap through it.

Removed the 13mm bolts.... does the black plastic cover thing come off?

didnt want the engine dropping out! Haha

i did tap it, but now just goes in and spins so think the bolt fooked, may get a same sized bolt and try that to.

If you can't lift the bit you unbolt with the 13mm heads then it's ok.

No need to take the plastic cover off. It's there to prevent the mount from perishing I'd assume.

best off actually removing the ecu side..often you cant move them in the bay from the weight of the engine but when you get them off the bolt is snapped

    Hmm conflicting info hah

How would i support the engine though? :/

Block of wood and jack under the sump. Undo the 4x T50 bolts on the metal arm of the mount, then the 2x M8 bolts on the mount itself. Should be able to wiggle the whole thing off then.
  22. #22
But if the bolt had snapped then the mount would lift right out without touching the engine half of the mount.

I've seen more than enough snapped to know this
  23. #23
But frankly, a snapped upper mount would cause more knocks and masses of vibrations.

Worn gearbox upper mount WILL cause your front end to wobble.
  24. #24
How do you tell if the g.box mount is worn?

Had the whole thing off today but didnt really know what i was looking for :/
  25. #25
The rubber inside will be quite soft and lumpy. It's probably just worth fitting a new one for the sake of 12 quid.

Flip it upside down and remove the metal insert from inside the rubber. The rubber will probably be crumbling away if it's dead.

Thanks guys, will get on it

ive drove cars with snapped upper mount that you couldnt tell tbh..only from the clicking it makes when you pull off

just depends where abouts the bolt has snapped
  29. #29
    Mine clicks :O
