Feckity feck feck

    Right,there's a fucking noise coming from either the n/s/f wheel or n/s/r wheel and I can't for the life of me figure it out.

    It started today and I ain't had the chance to check anything over in depth but the symptoms are......

    The noise starts at any speed really,usually in and around 15-30mph and can be heard upwards to 60mph or so.....now the noise usually buggers off when I apply the brakes.

    I happens in a straight line and sometimes goes away when I turn slightly to one side but I'm not entirely sure of this.

    Now the o/s/r front wheel bearing was goosed a few months back and I replaced that but this sounds different.....

    Now I fitted a set of wheels with 50 aspect ration and I'm wondering if its fouling something,but that wouldn't explain the noise going away when I brake,I've also checked that and there isn't any fouling unless its turned almost full lock.

    Another thing I thought was the brake pads moving about as the rear pads are properly low and I have a new set to go on,I thought this was plausible as the noise goes away when I apply the brakes but I checked as best I could and the pads felt in place and sturdy enough....I couldn't move them.

    I really hope it ain't the bearing

    Any ideas?

    Jack it up hold the wheel and check for play,put the steering on lock both ways so that you can check for wear on the tyres through scrubbing.

    If the noise stops when you brake it's probably to do with that. Gently feather the brakes to see if the noise stops, if so, gently tug the handbrake when moving, if that stops the noise it's probably the rear brake!

    I forgot to say I had tried the handbrake and the noise remained.....

    After work today I'm going to replace the rear pads and check for any free play on both near side wheels......

    Jacked the motor up after work as I was going to fit the replacement pads and I checked the near side first.

    No movement what so ever,changed the pads.......everything looks ok......

    Checked the offside back and whilst spinning the wheel it was making a noise which was similar to what I could hear,I lay down and had a gander and I could see whilst spinning the wheel that the inside pad was moving and the anti rattle springs were no where to be seen.

    So I changed the pads thinking that the thickness on the pads would stop any unwanted movement and it seems the noise has fucked off......

    No noises at all in 40 miles.....brakes are much better now as well.

    Happy days! I get a chunking under breaking on mine but it's rust under the disc, take it off and clean it problem solved. When I first did it I just changed the discs and it seemed asked at first but then came back, only then realised the true solution!

    just started to read this and thought! i know exactly what that is!

    i have this issue, some how the little metal "shim" that makes the pads sit nice and tight on the rear caliper must of come out whilst i was driving, pulled over had a look and i could move the pads with my fingers. practically pull them out of the caliper.

    waiting for a new fitting kit for mine now glad you sorted it though.

    Does your daughter need to read this?

    Its a car forum with a high percentage of older teen drivers and young twent something's......what do you expect?

    I'm a bit older than this and having an 8yr old myself I can understand,but if I'm concerned about my wee man reading something he shouldn't I wouldn't be on here with him by my side reading the threads....
