Do most folk use a proper tool for winding the piston back in or do you get away with another method??

I'm thinking of using a screwdriver or something slightly larger and hammering it clockwise to wind it back in.

Screwdriver should suffice just put it in the slot of the piston and turn, it'll wind back

No hammering needed. Screws back in by hand forces. Dont use sharp edges you'll rip the dust cover.
