What turbo to buy ? Help

Long time no speak fellow chaps,

The turbo build is still progressing just not in the cherry gti,

I've just bought myself a dp blister downpipe which has a gt25-28 5 bolt flange, however my manifold is to suit a t25-28 flange.

What turbo shall I go for in the gt series shall I go for ? And where is best to buy one from as eBay is just full of Chinese cheese

mmm... the GT28's are far too big for the small engine in these cars, well.. not really, but laggy, but big power is there once its spooled.

I think a mediocre turbo for these IF you was to go GT28, is the garrett GT2876R - its normally used on allot of 4-pot engines, but usually engines that are a slight bit bigger than 1.6 lol

Although id ask ross on that - as hes more than likely tried it, but bearing in mind 8 psi on a gt28 would give you similar power to 12 psi on a smaller turbo but take slight longer to spool.

Heard good things about the gt28rs but can't justify the £1000 + for a genuine garrett turbo, would much prefer a good used turbo,

By the looks of it I'm going to be tig welding a fresh flange on the down pipe and using my current t28, which was at full boost at 2750 on my old furio and kept boost even at higher rpm.

Just getting sick of adapting everything I buy to fit and work properly, suppose that's the way the cookie crumbles with this stuff

Keep at it dude, i know dp might take it back and fit a new flange for you? (At Price though)

I had slight hassle on my build, but mine wasnt using high quality parts like you have - is this going on another car or the 106?

Will see what I can make of it, but I'm going to have to make a 4 bolt flange to weld on, as I can't find any which are already made for my turbo,

I've just bought an immaculate mk1 white vts and is soo much better than the gti, will get some pictures up when I've finished removing tar haha

whats your power aim? likes of scooby td04 will give you north of 250bhp easily for a £40 turbo..the scooby lads drop them for td05 or diff..

used to be able to get them for pennies but the 306 diesel lads now bum them

    Sorry I missed this earlier.

The downpipe you have from DP will fit any T25/28 or GT25/28 turbo with a 5 bolt flange. The flange are the same.

Thinking about the turbo size, Andy's reference to the TD04's is a good shout. The smaller garretts are easily available but you need to think about what you want from the car. Round town, a GT17 will be untouchable (but wont fit your existing setup so you'll need to mod it), but will run out of legs if you get to stretch it's legs. Any T25/T28 is going to be laggy on these engines. the GT25/28's are a better option.

Your ultimate power goal, use, and budget are the things to consider. If I were specc'ing a quick road car with good all round usability, that would work with your existing setup, I'd probably go with a GTX2860RS to be honest - but you'll be mega lucky to find one second hand. Conversely, once bought, they hold their value well
