Both or neither. You can just take the pump and pipes off. You may nees to remove the ram off the steering rack.

Or if you go to a non pas rack you will need column too

Do a search as I found some threads very helpful.

    Hi Tom,

It's fairly straightforward to do. I kept the PAS rack in mine as it's slightly shorter than the Non-PAS rack. Remove the rack, drain the fluid, take the hydraulic ram off, and then refit the rack. You'll need to refit the bolts as it's an MOT fail if there are open ports on the rack. I used chemical metal to fill the holes in the original bolts and simply refitted them. You can then unplug the pump and remove it and the hoses, and chuck them. I weighed mine, it's around 11kg you save.

I did it the proper way and replaced the entire rack and steering column from a 106 Zest I think it was! Lighter than a modified PAS rack, takes up less room in the bay and lighter too. Best thing I ever did was ditching the PAS!

There isn't a proper way as such.

What you have done is removed all of it and fitted a non-PAS setup, which is fine, but it's lighter turn to turn because it's a longer rack.

If you want a quicker rack, you can remove the ram from the PAS rack and use that with no fluid, it's a cheap way of getting a quick rack compared to the standard non-PAS setup.

Quaife also offer a quick rack which is even faster, but more money.

Ditching the PAS gives a lovely steering feel on the move, but it's worth working out what you want. An entire non-PAS setup will work and be lighter, just like driving a non-PAS car, a PAS rack converted will be faster, but harder work for parking etc.

It's worth noting if you fit a converted PAS setup, you will likely need the PAS steering column as well, as they're different. Or they were when I converted my 1995 106 with a 2003 PAS converted to non PAS setup.
