Important! : Driving with an overtightened cam belt

    Hi people

Just done my first head gasket change, everything I did was perfect except the tensioning of the timing belt. The first time I put it on, it was whining and rattling because it was too tight, took it all apart again and made it looser, at which point I thought I had done it but the whining sound returned as the engine got hot. The guide I followed which stated to get it "just tight enough to twist 90 degrees between your fingers" is much too subjective!!

I really want my car drivable again now, and am busy, so would much rather just pay someone to do it. By far the cheapest option I have found is to take it to a garage about 3 miles away from me, my question is will it be safe enough to drive carefully to the garage or not really.. the cambelt is whining under acceleration.

Ninety degrees between fingers with hardly any effort.

People drive thousands of miles with Cambelts too tight.
