Self refurbished steelies.

Has anyone ever refurbished and painted steelies by themself? Thinking of doing is as a little job for myself.
For anyone that had done it what did you use to get the rust off? And then I take it its just a case of priming and spraying afterwards. Cheers.

I did my ka wheels, they have hub caps on so wasn't fussed about them being mint but just didn't want them rusty. All I did was start sanding them with a fairly rough grit sand paper (cannot remember how the grit system works) and then spent ages with some fine sand paper to make them very smooth and then I just sprayed with about 3 layers of black paint and that was it. Didn't primer or lacquer and a year on they're still black with no rust coming through or anything!
Maybe I was just lucky so I'd recommend using red oxide primer after te sanding for yours if the rust is bad

If it were me I would get a wire brush attachment for an angle grinder for the initial rust removal. I used one on my hubs etc lately, worked a treat! Someone will say no don't do it though... Lol

    You're a genius, unlike me.

Not only do I have a grinder, metal brush attachment, and power drill with many bristly things, and a dremel, I also have a set of 4 steel wheels I was getting disheartened about sanding down by hand!

Sometimes I don't know how I'm even alive.

That made me chuckle a bit!

I'd go to town with the wire attachment the only thing better than a power tool is a bigger power tool...

    And maybe a hammer...

If in doubt, give it a clout!

If at first you don't succeed, grab a bigger hammer!

Funny you should say that....while i was aimlessley using sandpaper my dad walks from the garage with a fk off power drill with the bristly attachment. Not got 2 wheels ready for spraying. Another two to do tomorrow

Pics of your dad brandishing his powerful tool with a look of authority and lust in his eye?

I used a wire brush on the end of the drill for my Punto wheels. Bought them up quite good after a few hours.

I painted on Hammerite direct to the wheels, it was easy with a few coats but the white soon turned Yellow due to the heat from the breaks and then ultimately peeled away in the winter when the salt got under the pitted paint.

Yeah I did it with my corsa steelies years ago come up really good. As for getting rust/corrosion off elbow grease.
