Does the ECU need unlocking?

    A friend stripped a VTS for use of the engine etc for a 16V conversion.

    Unfortunately he unplugged the wrong black box with the engine running to unlock the ECU, see box:



    He then tried to unplug the coil by the ignition to see if it had worked, it snapped it as below. After this, it started fine for a second then he turned it off.



    Does this mean it has work and it is unlocked, or will it have cut out after 5 seconds etc?

    If it was locked, it wouldn't start with the wrong key/immobiliser combination

    Oh okay, so it wouldn't have started at all..

    Would it have started with it in the state it was in the photograph if it was locked?
