Saxo engine cut out, now it won't start!

I was just driving my saxo desire 1.1 and drove for about 25 miles. When I stopped at traffic lights and pulled away the car felt like it was in too higher gear and all the warning lights came on. I stopped the car for about 30 mins and managed to move it off the road. The engine was whining loads and sounded horrible! When I parked up, the car was smoking and it looked like it was coming from the alternator. Now the car just clicks when you try and start it and the engine won't turn over.

    Any thoughts?

Could be anything.. Starter motor could be a good shout.. But that wouldn't explain the car cutting out.. Do all the dash lights come on, and the headlights? If not, chances are it's the alternator..

All the lights and electrics work fine! The car sometimes does one turn over, but seems like the engine has siezed up?

Have you checked your oil & water levels?

Both are fine! After the car cut out, I started it to move it elsewhere. The car ran but only with constant revving. It was really loud and whiny. Now it won't turn over.
