Squeaking noise from under the bonnet

  1. #1
Ive had a bit of a search and there seems to be several possibilities but I thought id describe my noise.
Has been happening a few days now and I don't want to drive it anymore really.
The squeaking noise seems to come on as soon as I start up and whilst driving. However when I press in the clutch or when I go in to neutral (coasting) the noise seems to almost completely stop. It also doesn't seem as loud when under about 1500 revs.
When I lifted up the bonnet to have a look it sounds like its coming from under the cam cover/inlet manifold and the left side of the bay, so where all the pulleys and belts are etc so I assume its something to do with that area.
I have a video somewhere on my phone so i'll figure out a way to get that up on here.
Anyone got any ideas as to what could be wrong?
    Thanks

Some of the hamsters have escaped!

is it a squeak or a screech? Is the aux belt slipping? Spray some WD40 on the belt while it's running, if the noise stops lash a new belt on it and tighten accordingly.

Id say more a squeak... I don't know how to tell if the aux belt is slipping.

Odd that, you can try spraying some WD40 on the aux belt, it should stop the noise if it is slipping which will let you know if it's that or not.

As a side note - your mirror caps appear to wrapped in some sort of diamond pattern?!

Ok thanks, I shall try that. If it still makes a noise what do you think it could be?

Either your cambelt is over tensioned or the cambelt tensioner is worn.

Problem is fixed now, the crankshaft pulley was knackered so I got a new one and a new alternator belt and its all good now. Cheers for the suggestions guys.
