Alternator belt adjusting

   I've had a squeel coming from my Saxo for a while now, it's only got louder. So I think it's time to sort it, I'm still all new to this so can anyone point me in the right direction on how to adjust it? I had a look today and it's definitely my alternator belt, I sprayed some water on the ribbed side and it stopped for 5 seconds. I've heard it could be a pulley problem, or the belt just needs tightening. Any help will be appreciated, I won't do it until the weekend but I wanna make sure I know what I'm doing first!
   Anyone who's had this before knows how annoying and embarrasing it is! Lol.

   You will see a long threaded bolt coming from the bracket, that is how you adjust it pal, easy as that!

   Could be a bit greasy on the belt or pulley.
   
   Once you've assisted it, if it helps but doesn't totally cure it, get a new belt and use some soapy washing up liquid water on the pulleys as you change it, cuts the grease great and you will know how to change the belt!

   I've just had a quick look at it, I noticed a crack in the alternator itself, would that be a problem?
   Stevo, the belt does have a bit of slack, enough for me to think that's the problem but I didn't see a big threaded bolt like that. It was probably staring me in the face lol. I'll have a look Saturday in the light.

    Take a pic from underneath looking up, will be able to see adjuster mechanism then. Is this on your vtr or 1 litre?

    I'll take another one on saturday when I get time. It's on my 1 ltr Saxo X (I think they call them?) I basically put all of my VTR bits onto it though, apart from the engine for insurance reasons! Lol.

    Could be the rubber in the bottom pulley or as you said the alt belt, to adjust it you have a bolt under the alt,unscrew the two 13mm bolts first to allow the tensioner to move,one bolt is just to the right of the belt and the other one from underneath you'll see it fixing in place the tensioner,turn the bolt clockwise to decrease the tension or anti-clockwise to increase it.

    VeiRoN, I wish I would've read that earlier, I was there for 5 minutes trying to work out why it wasn't moving then noticed them bolts. Didn't help it was dark, but all sorted now cheers guys.
    One more quick qestion, can it be too tight?

    No problem,on the longest section the belt should have a play of 0.5/10mm down.

    It moves a bit, I'm not sure how much play it actually has as I had to do it quick, but I'll check it tomorrow when it's lighter.

    It can be too tight,in which case it`ll strain your alternator bearings.
