Inner wing goo.

    Hello.

I've stripped the track car to install a new gearbox and currently tackling the rust on the inner wings. Whilst preparing the area, I've come across a light grey goo. I presume its some sort of inner arch metal protection paint or coating from the factory. The rust has set in behind it and it flakes away in most places - the rot is contained to the usual parts, so I'm on with that.

My question is about how to get the goo off. I have some jenoline to get splashed on so need to take it back to the metal.

Would a heat gun assist with the goo?
Is it a tar like substance? the wire wheel doesn't like it.

I'm guessing I'll find the same on the rear?

Its not just on the seams (like I can see inside the car).
It covers 90% of the inner wings and is noticeably thicker at the bottom of the wings where the rust hasn't got behind it. More like a protective plasticky type paint.

Theres no underseal on the inner wings from factory nor the underside of them as far as i know/. edit; wheel arches have underseal yeah. any pics?

wonder if the prev owner has lashed it on before sale as a cover up

The other side looks like it doesn't have as much. you can see where the wire wheels doesn't like it.

I think that looks like waxoyl stuff.

I thought you meant the inner wings as in in the engine bay/underside not the wheel arches lol.

Yeah they have underseal, same colour as the car painted.

    Sorry.

So how to get that off - heat gun?

A scraper combined with an old screwdriver.
