News : How to fit a cup holder into your dash

  1. #1
Had a few requests to do this so here goes.

firstly you need to remove the console around the radio and heater.
remove the radio first then the 5 screws shown below.

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

once you have got them out, unplug all the switches so its completely free from the car.

once you have removed this you need to remove the row of buttons with the blanks hazards and rear window heater.

then remove all the blank buttons so you are left with just the two buttons on the far right.

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

now you need to trim the supports out so you are left with a complete opening big enough for the cup holder to fit in to

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

now before you can start installing the cup holder you will need to remove the front plate with the picture of the cup on it as its too tall to fit in the gap and also the plate is not wide enough to fill the gap.

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

this plate is held in place with 2 plastic gromits.

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

once you have this off you can slide the cup holder into place.
once this is in place the fun starts to begin.

You now need to have all 4 blanks so you can start modifying them to fit onto the cup holder.

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />
    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

You then need to rest all 4 blanks on top of the cup holder so you can work out spacing and where you will need to trim them so you can secure them. When you are trimming them you need to leave a couple of mm of clearance so once they are fixed you can push the buttons in to make the holder pop out. (this can take a while to do).

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />
    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

once all 4 are modified to your specification depending on cup holder.
you need to secure them all to the front of the cup holder.
i used engine sealant silicon to fix these and it has a good secure fixing but gives the blanks a bit of flexibility when you push them.

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

i filled all blanks with the silicon and rested the cup holder on to them.

once these have set (roughly 24 hours)
you now need to modify the back of the air vent in the console.
put the cup holder back into the console and cut a small piece out so the cup holder sits flush

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

I did not need to secure the cup holder in as it holds itself in with the clips built in to it.

before you can fit the console back to the car you need to modify the other part of the heater inside the dash or completely remove it. ( see below)

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

i decided to remove mine as i dont use this air vent.

once you have done this you are ready to reinstall the console with the cup holder in.

if every thing is done correctly it should look like this.

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

    " border="0" class="tcattdimglink" onload="NcodeImageResizer.createOn(this);" alt="" />

I will update the rest of the pictures over the weekend.

hope this helps some of you

    can you not relocate that?

Relocating airbag button would be easy to do.

I will be searching the scrap yards for a suitable cup holder to fit this mod to my vtr.

Outstanding work. Looks good. When you say 'modify the heater'. The bit under the dash. What exactly do you do? Are you cutting a lump out?

you can do it that way or just remove the piece that joins your heater in the centre console
