Won't start

  1. #1
    Hi,

    I have a saxo 1.8 vtr
It has just had the engine replaced (same type)
But won't start, it's cracking but not firing.
Has spark, has fuel, coil pack replaced ,battery fine
I believe the inhibitor switch is by passed.
It does however have a mbe ecu

    Any ideas ?

Any warning lights on the dash?

Nope none , and doesn't have immobiliser either

If it's got spark and fuel then it should fire. Are you sure the injectors are firing and the plugs are sparking? Ie: tested them outside of the engine

    Yep defo sparking

You say it is sparking, so that leaves fuel. Take an injector out and make sure there is fuel. If fuel is present as well as spark it can only realistically be a timing problem. Which I think is controlled by the ECU.

    Could be a compression problem

do you know the injectors are firing? Other than timing that doesnt leave a lot else. Compression it could be but it'd have to be seriously low on that front to not start at all, even with bad compression it'd probably still have a go at running as its unlikely all the cylinders will be affected in the same way unless there is valve damage

check fule cut off switch too

Check crank case position sensor as if it's loose or unplugged it won't fire. It's the only sensor your engine won't fire because

Put some petrol down the inlet, if it fires it's not getting fuel.

If it doesn't kick, then you've got no spark and/or no fuel as well.

No spark is usually a failed ECU (not as likely but it can happen), flywheel sensor or knock sensor are more common failures.
