gearbox or clutch?

    Heyy all

long time no post I know but I've been busy and not had time to focus on the car.. it's run fine up until now and I have a sneaky suspicion it's going tits up quick..

Basically a couple of days a go a sound that I thought was the engine sucking lots of air into the inlet manifold and thought it might be a mucky ICV seems to have developed to a ropey very horrible almost metal grinding sound coming from the back of the block... it dulls slightly when driving at higher revs and when the clutch is depressed and I am thinking ether clutch or gearbox... today when driving home the clutch almost felt gritty under foot and the gearbox clunked into a few gears, and a real whine came from the engine bay whilst decelerating... anyone got any ideas what it could be or had this problem before?

is it going to cost me? as I cant afford to throw dosh at it really

It could be the input shaft bearing in the gearbox or the clutch release bearing is worn and/or has slipped off the release arm.

    cheers! Is it common?
probably one of those "got to pull it apart to find out" bits!

Kinda what I was suspecting I would need to do... looks like it's time to find an expert to pull the car apart and diagnose it!

It's quite common, depends more on how the car has been driven as in gently or hard. I've seen some who will glaze the clutch just by slipping the clutch constantly while whacking the gears in.

A valeo clutch kit is around 50 to 60 quid + labor.

usually pretty sensable.. odd moments of hastle getting into reverse but that's all... unless my sloppy wobbly stick has played part on it! the common wobble I've had a while!

I'm guessing it's a gearbox off job then?

I'd say just the clutch (bearing) since you described as follows:

it dulls slightly when driving at higher revs
Means the clutch is losing bite when you put your foot down. You also just need a new gear linkages pin to solve the wobble issue.
