new ish saxo

Hey all im saul and im new here.
Recently ish i bought my first saxo 1.1 02 plate nd ive had a few problems here and there but they are all mainly to do with the cooling system.
I first replaced the radiator as it was leaking, well it was dripping from the fins nd it looked quiet bad.... Then the head gasket went so i changed that but thats a different bit all together.
Then i had to change a hose the top right one( dont use hose clips they dont seal properly and leak when the thermostat opens) but now i have 2 problems.... When the car has been warmed and hot then cools the water level drops quiet low.. So i filled it up to halfway between low and max but when it got warm it suddenly gained water and started coming out the top of the header tank. Waited for it to cool and its up at the top of the neck. Whats causing this to happen. The other problem is that the temp gauge in the dash when switched off drops to the bottom and constantly taps the case for about 10 seconds, sometimes when starting it will rise to the base of the gauge some times not what can be causing either of these problems. Thanks alot

    Welcome Saul.

The gauge could be a sign of a dead temperature sensor. There are 2, blue and green iirc.

Your water level issue sounds like you have an air lock somewhere. I'd drain the coolant system again, refill and rebleed. Make sure you open all the nipples up, and make a makeshift headertank to screw into the top of the radiator fill cap using an old 2 litre coke bottle with the top cut off.

Fill the system with water with the engine turned off until you have water running from the black nipple on the rear of the engine from the heater matrix. Then close the nipples up, start up the engine and run it up to temperature. Top up as needed.

Okay ill bleed the coolant system again but what do i do with the excess coolant that will be in the tank after it gets bled, surely itll be over the max line ?

You mentioned a dead temperature gauge, however i have an obdii tool that can read the stats of the car just like fast and furious and all the telemetrics and that.... Its able to give me temperature readings through that

You can use a bit of hose and suck it out, do it slowly by rolling a cloth up, dipping it in and wringing it out, or you can use a turkey baster or something to suck the excess out and ditch it.

I lolled at OBD2 being like Fast and Furious haha.

Well if you have an OBD connection, what are the temperature readings like, are they accurate or are they obviously miles out?

Always happy to make people laugh .... The readings are between 80 and 110 so quiet possibly true

The thermostat opens at 90 IIRC so that sounds about right? Someone with a bit more knowledge on the temps will likely clarify.

I took it apart nd it had some rubbish trapped in it and i took it out nd it said 89°c i think is it possible to lower it to something like 70-80 ?

The part of your post I can't understand is where you say about radiator clips not sealing correctly, care to clarify mate?

Reply to stevo i bought some of the hose clips the ones that as you screw them the smaller they get, well i put them on nd they just didnt make a proper seal around it nd when the thermostat opened it came pouring out of there so i put the old spring clips things back on and it stopped
