Saxo VTS: Fine - Misfires - Doesn't start

  1. #1
My Saxo VTS (02) has a peculiar problem.

Firstly, the engine management light comes on (usually after 9 miles of driving.) and it begins to miss fire, this gets worse as i drive, by this i mean if i stop at the traffic lights the revs drop and the car stalls and refuses to start. The engine turns but doesn't hold revs to keep it at idle.

The only way the car will start is by clearing the faults, this is a temporary fix as after 9 miles the fault occurs again and we're in the cycle of clearing faults etc.

When the faults are cleared it drives perfect until it reaches the 9 mile barrier.

    Crankshaft sensor?

Well it would help if we know the fault codes lol.

Here's the image, bear in mind once the faults are cleared it drives fine and after 9 miles of driving the engine management light comes on then. Once faults cleared it starts fine so the faults occur whilst driving.

New coil pack for starters & unless you fix the problems the codes will come back along with the eml.

Cheers. Looks like I'll start with that.

Would the coil park be intermittent? As in, the car runs fine until the eml makes it's appearance. I thought the coilpack was just a problem with starting per se.

    Map sensor!!

Okay, changed the crankshaft sensor (cheapest first) which didn't resolve the issue. So, as suggested I'm trying new coil pack within next few days. Then it'll be MAP sensor.

Realised why it runs fine up to 9 miles, that's how long it takes to heat up. So once I clear the codes and let it cool down it will start & run fine for 9 miles. If I don't let it cool down it will not start even if the codes are cleared.

    Will update with results.

What about the coolant temperature sensor too?

I shall bear that in mind too. Thanks.

When a coil pack is breaking down they often do it when hot, hence letting the car cool down then starting the car.mine did the exact same thing.

Okay so, crankshaft sensor changed, coil pack now changed, yet problem persists.

Next suggestions appear to be MAP sensor & coolant temperature sensor.

This is getting ridiculous. Anyone want to buy a VTS? Drives fine for 15 minutes the EML comes on then begins to miss. Then it goes into limp mode before breaking down and doesn't restart until it's cool and faults are cleared.

    Get a compression test done.
