knocking

  1. #1
So ive had a knocking when turning left and its been bugging the hell out of me
At first I thought it was a bearing but after checking there is no play in either wheel and listening hard for a whineing noise proved me wrong and the bearing seems fine
After reading a few forums and various posts sugesting this and that I investigated and decided from advice on forums it was most likely a cv joint
Investigating today ive found this (see pic) could this be the cause? The cv boots are intact so I know its not one of those...

    Driveshaft oil seal.

Will this be the cause of the knocking do you think?

I doubt it tbh,it's the reason why the oil is leaking out though.Unless of course the leak is somewhere else & is running down the engine.

Dab your finger in the oil and smell it. Gear box oil fucking stinks, if it's honking it'll be a driveshaft oil seal.

It is gearbox oil there are no trails above of next to it and it does have a distinctibe pong
Is a seal an easy change or is that part of the drive shaft
More than happy to do all the work as im more than able however my mechanical mind leaves a bit to be desired lol
Also now still scratching my head at this knocking

Does it knock when your on full lock?

Whilst driving it knocks whilst turning left and the knocking can be felt in the steering wheel
Also at about 60 to 70 mph the wheel shakes like a bearing would cause
However ive got it up on axle stands now and cant hear any knocking whilst turning full lock left and right
I really dont want to put it in a garage as if I can do it myself I will do lol

I'd say that I'll be your cv joint, you'll not be able to hear it while the cars on stands going lock to lock. Rather than change the cv joint you may as well change the whole shaft. While your at it you can change the oil seal.

Depends on which side but a shaft is about £30 from J&R delivered and it easy to do yourself.

Yeah I was thinking that would be the best bet to be honest I think I will go ahead and order it and go from there
