Teething Problems

  1. #1
Today I've mostly brought the 106 16v conversion I've been doing into work for it's debut run out.

On the whole, things work fairly well. If you're tootling around it's canny, except the idle is shit.

However, feeling a bit more confident that it wasn't about to catch fire, I've just been and given it some beans, and all is not well.

Basically, it's sluggish as buggery. If you plant it in 2nd or 3rd it bogs down and feels like it's missing, it does pull to the redline, but nothing like how it should do.

It almost sounds like it's missing further up the rev range, although it isn't jerky as you'd expect. Typically, no engine management lights, no codes, nothing on fire / smoking, it's just way down on power.

    Thoughts?

I'd say you need to adjust the timing

    And that it needs lowering

Check the timing, do a compression test.

Mine acted like a turd when I had a bit of damp in the tps connector. My mates ran fine up til about 3krpm then would feel completely lethargic when his crank sensor started aacting up. Neither showed fault codes or ecu light.

Crank sensor could be a good shout, it's fine lower down, then sluggish past 3k.

That said, I went out earlier this morning and it seemed to clear and was pulling hard. Could even just be shit in the filter maybe. The way it cleared up and drove before, the timing has to be fine, it was flying. It's either fixed itself or I'll start changing things, ie crank sensor, coilpack, map sensor etc.

Let it warm up properly then take it for a thrashing. Might just be some shite built up

how longs the fuel in it been sitting?

There's half a tank, 5 litres may be 6 months old tops, the rest is under a week.

    However....

I've clearly still got an underlying electrical fault somewhere. It's been parked outside for 4 hours, I've gone to start it and it's barely turning over. I checked the battery and it's showing the green light still, however the earth terminal is red hot, and the battery is fairly warm.

    Obviously I've unplugged the battery.

    Fucking hell man.

so many teething problems with conversions mate i had the same and feel your pain buddy. Dont give up worth it in the end.

With regards to the battery, You have high resistance some where, check both cable's to make sure there not corroded inside towards the end where the wire shows, check for any bubbling in the casing as this would suggest the cables fucked.
    .
Also check what condition your terminal clamps are in. if there corroded this can cause high resistance hence why it struggled to turn over and why there's heat.

    Was the neg terminal cool?
