Possible death of my vts...

So driving back from my mrs earlier, the car drove spot on with no faults as usual. But after trying to fix a rattling in the boot, and going for a test drive, the below happened while 1ft away from my driveway on the drive home.

    Camber, yo.

Basically it made a loud bang, and clatter as I pulled onto my drive. So I parked up, got out and had a look to see oil was pissing from underneath.
I've not a clue where this 'oil' has come from, and not quite sure what the full extent of the damage is, but I presume the wishbone has clearly snapped off, possibly with the driveshaft.

Could anyone give me a rough guesstimate on what this will set me back if it's obvious as to what's fucked? Also bare in mind I'm retarded (mechanically) and will have to be done in a Garage
Insurance is up next week also and I can't afford that due to losing my job, so debating whether to just call this quits been as money is more than tight atm.

It's far from dead. About 30 minutes work tbh.

    Wishbone. About £35 from ebay.

Could get just the bottom ball joint and have it pressed in which would be slightly cheaper, but for the sake of it its quicker and easier to just get a whole new wishbone.

trust me - you CAN do this yourself. It's a piece of piss. Honestly. If you can take a wheel off, you can do this.

Edit - the oil is just where the wheel/hub has pulled the driveshaft out of the box. When you put your new wishbone in the shaft will reseal in the box. You'll need some gearbox oil for that too obviously.

    Made my day Ross
Suppose I just panicked at first because of the oil and thought the worst, hopefully should get it sorted asap.

Remember to refill your gearbox with oil before you drive it again.

Tell me about it, literally popped out when I was doing probably 2mph along my drive. I'll still be leaving it to my bamp to fix haha

Suprised the tyre wear wasn't a givaway of something up.

Ive got a wishbone here if you need it, balljoint is in good condition as are the mounts. PM me if you want, its genuine rather than the shit ebay ones.

As above, easy job though really.

I've known it was on it's way out for a while now, but presumed it wasn't that bad. Oh well only one way to learn

buy a haynes manual and get reading.

with the angle of that shaft probably wise to replace the driveshaft seal too, not expensive from motorfactors, however a pug or citroen dealer is often best bet for the gear oil, it needs to be the proper 75w80 stuff, nothing else and not EP stuff either.
  15. #15
    Basically total transmission bv 75w80.
    Why not the EP rating?
  16. #16
extra pressure, its for separate diff units not pug/citroen synchros

Bloody hell that must of been bad for ages to disconnect the ball joint like that

Poor maintenance tbh (no offence OP)

There would have been a knock there for ages - looks like it's sheered the ball joint itself, which would have knocked and had tremendous play in it for a while before finally just snapping.

    None taken I'm useless
It had been knocking for ages, but I presumed it was just some play in the driveshaft and nothing major.

When it starts knocking like that, you're one pothole short of disaster. Somehow it's a good thing you broke it right in front of your house.

Oh trust me it shook me up. I live in the countryside so there's 60 roads all the way towards my house pretty much, lucky isn't the word.

Your car is going to drive great when that's fixed. Check the other side too, it's probably in a similar state.
