Oil catch tank set up.

Hi there,i got one of these square oil catch tank and i fitted one using one of the battery mounting points,i know these are not the best ones but since i got one for free i wanted to fit it anyway even because of the aftermarket filter with no place for it to be connected.

Firstly i tried to simply connect the breather hose to the oil catch tank outlet and leave the second hole for the mini breather filter, this did not work as the vapours would get instantly burned instead of going to the tank bottom.

Currently i attached an extension hose to the oil catch tank so the vapours should have the time to get liquid and deposit to the bottom of the tank,on the other outlet there is still the mini filter, unfortunately the extension hose is a bit smaller than the standard breather pipe,16mm against 10,even if it only goes for less than 10cm,my doubt is,could this cause any problem with breather flow?

    How have you connected yours?

    Thanks.

This makes no sense to me.. Any pictures? Basically, get 30-40cm of pipe, to allow the vapour to cool, will only be a quid or so off ebay, or you may get some sort of silicone hose in hardware shops.. Then Put the catch tank as far forward as you can, so it gets air cooled, rather than engine heat pushing back onto it..

Make sure you're putting your breather filter, higher than the pipe going into to tank.. Otherwise the oil will just drip into the filter.. Common sense, but you would be surprised at people who do it!

Will put a pic up later, thanks for now.

I'd just get some longer pipe, to allow it to cool a little before it gets into the tank.. Won't harm anything like that, some people bang a filter pretty much straight onto the outlet..

Might need a baffle in the catch tank, I've seen people use stuff like wire wool and brillo pads.
Lots of diy guides on google.

Put some SS gauze in it too, chances are it's empty it's a cheap one

Thanks ppl,the video helped a lot,i'm going to see if the vapours gets to the bottom the way it is now,if not i'll put in some SS wire wool and i'm sure that is gonna solve the "problem",cheers.

Be alot less hassle just using the oe airbox and breather with a decent panel filter.

Well if over several months there's no deposits in the tank i could think of doing that but for now it stays as it is,even because the TB has been cleaned recently.

Well in theory you will get more power as you wont be trying to burn off oil. You are not running a diesel after all....

The reality is its not going to be a lot percentage wise but it all helps

    Fair doos

And you always want to try and have the tank above the top if the engine - otherwise oil will run down into the tank as well as vapours.

So,i've tried putting this steel mesh in the tank but it still wouldn't work,i think this might be because the tank sits close to the radiator hose and gets quite hot helping to burn the vapours immediately,i've put some heat reflective tape around the tank to lower the temps, will see if it makes any difference or not.

On a standard vtr mk1 airbox there is an oval shaped oil strainer type thing.the breather pipe joins onto this maybe it's worth going down the scrappies and getting one of these strainers.just an idea may not work at all mate.
