knocking when revering

  1. #1
hi everyone i have a 1.1 forte and recently my car has been making a knocking noise when reversing doesnt happen all the time ( seems like front passenger side )
just wondering what i should be checking cheers

Could be a bottom ball joint, ARB bush, or gearbox/engine mount.

Does it do it when selecting the gear (just once), coming off the clutch and starting the reverse manoeuvre (again, just once) or constantly whilst reversing?
  3. #3
sometimes it doesnt do it, its just while reversing not while selecting gear
  4. #4
so once or constantly whilst you're reversing is what I'm asking. Once, when you START reversing, or like ... once a second, WHILST you're reversing?
  5. #5
it does not do it everytime i reverse but when it does knock it constantly knocks until i stop reversing
sorry for the mix up lol

So it's possibly a CV joint then. Does the knock increase in frequency as you speed up (whilst reversing obviously). Slow knocking as you're going very slowly, knock gets faster as you speed up?
  7. #7
think it did yes bud was thinking cv join myself but had a quick look and all seems fine :/
  8. #8
Not a lot else it can be tbh
  9. #9
will get wheel off and have a good look at cv joint
anything else i can check....you mentioned bottom ball joint, ARB bush, or gearbox/engine mount.

You can check that lot for sure but nothing else rotates (and so gives the frequent and road-speed dependant knocking). Only driveshaft and gearbox can be at fault, and unlikely to be the box.

That doesn't look too good :/

looks like it's smothered in CV grease. Which would point again to a driveshaft failure (cv grease should be on the inside of the boot, which has probably split, meaning the cv joint isn't lubed up, meaning it's failed and is now knocking.

That bottom ball joint is on it's last legs too - so you'll probably want a pair of wishbones on the car too.

So I'm best checking and or replacing cv joint and gettin a new set of wishbones? Scrappers b ok? Never done anything like this before

get a shaft from ebay for £30. new set of wishbones from ECP or the likes. If you buy stuff from the scrappy's you'll end up replacing it all again soon anyway.

Aye as chompy said. Probably fix it all for £100 or so. What I'd recommend is:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CITROEN-SA...item3f3b0d380a

    And this:

Driveshaft (fixes the failed cv joint) - when you buy the driveshaft make sure to give them your registration as there's two types.

First link is for droplinks and wishbones. If the ball joints are boned (and if one is the other is likely to be) then you can rest assured the drop links haven't been cared fro either. Replacing the droplinks and wishbones together is a good idea - partly because you've got to take the droplink off to do the wishbone anyway, and partly so you tidy up that part of the car too.

Once you've changed that lot, it'll drive like a new car

All in, for £100 or so, sorted

Don't get the wishbones from a scrappy,as they could be just as worn as the 1's you have or worse mate.
