One or two problems ?

  1. #1
    Dear All,
My daughters V-reg. 1.4 8v Saxo sx auto is playing up again.
The first problem she was having is the car would just " cut-out " Since I have been looking into this problem, the engine has just cut-out 3 times with me. No EML is being shown and the engine restarts staight away without any throttle applied and idles correctly. I have recently fitted a brand new crank sensor approximately 4.000 miles ago. What I have done today is too refit the original crank sensor ( which I had kept ) The engine since I fitted the old one has run without fault, so far.
The second problem she has is that the engine is whinning from the cambelt area. Today I have stripped the engine down to just having to removing the bottom crank pulley and removing the lower half of the plastic cambelt cover and then time it up and remove the cambelt. To find out what is making it whine. The whine isn,t overly noticeable, but I know it shouldn,t be there.
The third problem is one that I have noticed myself and that is that engine seems to be making a rumbling sort of noise. The engine doesn,t make the rumbling noise on tick over, only seems to be noisy when you hold the engine at approx 2,000 rpm on the throttle pedal. Below the revs and above the revs appears to be rumble free. The noise is more noticeable than the whinning cambelt, and sounds very similar to big ends knocking. This noise does concern me.
I won,t know until I strip it further weather permitting tomorrow.
Any help or advice would be very gratefully received

Run it without the alt belt on and see if it shuts up.
make sure the crank pulley is on the right way if not it sits just off set and the belt dos'nt like it

Regarding the rumbling sound, what is the mileage and oil pressure like on the engine?
  4. #4
Whine could be a cambelt too tight, unlikely if it's always been ok since it's been changed or a bad tensioner or water pump bearing

    Dear All,
Firdtly thank-you all so very very much indeed for all the help and the kind advice
marrygold, I fitted a new polyvee belt, when I renewed the cambelt. Today I removed the polyvee belt and the whine isn,t connected to the alternator or the belt
Stevo, We bought the Saxo with 78k and now she has done 97k So the old girl is still marching on very nicely. ( The sunroof leaks like a sieve the elec power steering doesn,t work and the fan blower and h.r.w doesn,t work very often because of the ignition switch problem ) So it is never going to be nice car for her sadly..
But with regards to the rumbling noise, I am thinking that the noise is down to something vibrating. Today I managed to remove the lower half of the plastic cambelt cover, it was then I noticed that one of two C shaped clips that hold the wiring loom in place, held on with tiny little torx screws, that one very loose. And I do know that the bottom half of the cambelt cover was already damaged when we got the car, it is held on tightly with the 3 x 10mm bolts but the bit around the one stud that holds it on it broken a liitle bit.
Gandii, 10 of 10 for that man Up until today I was thinking that perhaps that the cambelt was a little on the slack and perhaps rattling on the inside of the cambelt covers. So today I just slackened it off a tad
Today I got to the stage where I seem to have got listening to car engine itiss. The squeak seems to have gone but I am unsure whether or not that the rumbling is there or not.
The other event that happened today was that the Saxo cut-out on me again today, with the old crank sensor fitted. I think I might risk getting another new one.
Anyway many thanks indeed guys it is better to be safe and not sorry.

    Dear All,
Just an update with regards to the Saxo's current problems. The whinning noise was the cambelt just a tad on the tight sideand the runbling noise appears to have been sorted out too
Today I fitted another brand new crank sensor, in an a attempt to cure the engine from cutting out, but to no avail.
The engine seems to start and be able to crawl its way upto 1,000 rpm and without any use of the throttle pedal what so ever But if I touch the trottle pedal at all the engine dies. When I try to hold the engine revs at say 2,000 rpm using the throttle pedal, the engine revs are up and down like a yo-yo.
Apart from this problem the engine. The engine sounds and is running really very nicely indeed and appears to have no other issues even the s/h auto gearbox has been running without any faults what so ever
My thoughts with regards to the engine cutting is most probably a faulty throttle position sensor.
Any help or advice would be really gratefully received
I would be very gratefull if anyone could very kindly offer me a part number ? So that I could order a new one.

Hi vince if you do a search on here there is way to reset the tps, also when your starting the car get someone to wiggle the wiring to tps and see what happens.as it maybe either loose or broken.

    Dear Stevo,
Thank-you very very much indeed for your invaueable advice Steve
I have spent all this time trying to figure it out, I have only managed to figure out how to use the search button on one occasion and it is far too complicated for me to make any headway with it Steve Sorry

ignition on leave 10 secs then off and repeat 4 times and then turn engine on,resets the tps.

    Dear Stevo,
Firstly, thank-you so very much indeed Steve for your invalueable advice I have learn't something with that
Today, with regards to the engine cutting out problem, I have in my possesion a brand new coil pack that unfortunately has one broken plug lead tower on it ( that got damaged when I was putting the engine and box back in ) so I connected it up to the engine today, and although it is only running on 3 cylinders. I have run it up twice today and it hasn,t missed a beat
I am very pleased to have found out what the problem was Steve. The engine was running really really badly.
My only problem now is trying to source another new coil pack, the original one is filthy, so difficult to get the part number off. The new one only has these numbers on;- Lucas 3350 which I can,t seem to cross reference it to any other part numbers ?
There seems to be alot of them for sale Steve, are they all the same ?
    Many Thanks indeed

The thing to watch for is the colour of the connector plugs throughout the saxo range.do you have a eurocarparts store nearby?if so make a note of the reg and pop down there, that way you'll get the correct coil pack.

    Dear All,
Firstly, I just wanted to say thank-you very much indeed for all the kind and invalueable advice and help so far.
Secondly, is an update on the problem/s I am having with the Saxo. Ages ago now when I renewed the head gasket, I also fitted new plugs and new leadsHowever when Nat gave her back to me because of the car cutting out problem, I was getting a shock of the one of the plug leads when I put my hand across the top of the coil pack with the original coil pack fitted. Since that time I have since fitted a brand new coil pack. And the problem has occurred again with me getting shock from 2 more plug leads ( lucky I had kept the old ones )
Since Sunday was starting first time with no throttle and had the correct amount of fast idle. However today it has been running absoloutely rubbish, revs going up to 2,500 rpm all on its own and if I apply any throttle she starts hunting badly and sometimes it cut out completely again. All the plugs are all exactly the same colour now so no repeat of the head gasket problems at all
    Any advice would be great

With the plug leads probably the insulation has split, you'll soon know if you try to start it at night.you'll see it shorting.
  14. #14
    Dear Stevo,
I don,t know why the new plug leads have failed so quickly Steve, thankfully she seems to be running arc free at the moment
I am going to be putting a brand new idle air valve on next, hopefully that should cure it Steve. I have located one specifically for a 1.4 automatic from GSF for £ 32.40
Many Thanks indeed for your advice Steve

    Dear All,
I just wanted to update as a progress report.
Today I managed to get a brand new idle air valve, with the same part no. as the original one that is fitted for £ 13. 98
I have fitted the new one and after a few moments of idle maddness whilst the new one was settling in. It has only cut out completely twice since I reset the base idle screw.
I am at the moment back to letting the engine cool down and restarting it again from cold, to make sure the fast idle is working correctly again.
The car seems to be running a whole heap better with its new idle air valve and is still willing to start without any throttle being applied.
Anyway, fingers crossed that it is ok.
    Vince.

    Dear All,
Today, I managed to carry out a reset on the throttle position sensor. After I did that for the first time this morning the engine revs still managed to once to climb again to about 2k rpm all on its again. So I thought I would repeat the procedure, just to make really sure that I had done the procedure correctly. Since then it has still cut out again 3 times since.
It is now out of petrol until I can get a gallon tomorrow
I am seriously starting to quickly run out of things to change now.
    Many Thanks

Never seen a more polite person on this forum, about your problem, did you try to run a diagnostic on it? I've read there is no lights on but might be worth a try, maybe it has some codes in memory, does the car have any mods? Is the TB clean enough?

Hope you resolve your problems soon.

    Dear VeiRoN,
Firstly, thank you so very much indeed for your very kind compliments The very nice people in tonbridge which do all my m.o.t.s, they are clever people but when I asked once if they had ever heard of Lexia, they had never heard of it. On Monday I have to ring them to get my SAAB booked in for it,s M.O.T, as it due to expire on the 17th this month.
The Saxo is just ordinary 1.4 sx 8v auto ( standard with no mods ) I just took the air filter housing out and the throttle butterfly area is still clean.
    Dear Steve,
Thank you very much indeed for your kindness
Today I was spraying carb cleaner over everything trying to see if there are any possible air leaks, but with no joy. I also put a gallon of juice in it and it only took the normal amount time to get the petrol through properly, so no fuel problems that I can see. However later on this afternoon the engine won,t even start now without plenty of throttle and sounds rhubarb and then it dies.
Tomorrow I will try again to try and get it so that it at least ticks over again.
    Many Thanks

    Dear All,
Today I thought I would take a step back from this, and assess how bad it is. Now it won,t start unless I give it half a throttle worth of the accelorator pedal. Even then I have pump the throttle pedal like billy yo just to keep it running. If I rev it up to above 3k rpm it doesn,t sound too out of sorts, but trying to keep the revs at 2k rpm or 1,500 rpm it sounds very sort of pop-y and wooly and if I take my foot of the throttle she just dies.
    Many Thanks
    Vince.

Check the fuel pressure those are the symtoms of a failing fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter.
