Water pump torque

  1. #1
    Hi guys,

Changing the cam belt/water pump on my 1998 vts today. Just wondering what to torque the water pump bolts up to as I'm unsure if i have the small or large water pump

Guessing its the small one as the pulley has 19 teeth and seen some pumps with 20. So torquing bolts to 30Nm sound about right?

    280Nm......

    check the haynes

According to manual its either 30 or 65... Nice try

Tight's tight, stripped's fucked. With those bolts youre just holding the pump in place, not setting bearing preload or anything so youll be fine with a common sense "yeah thats tight enough"

I'm sure its something like 23nm if I remember right but then again the last one I did it just did it up to "tight" by hand.

Aye. Just do it to "tight". Doesn't need to be set to anything special. It's not load bearing etc.

its probably to stop the body of the pump turning when the belt is in. As we all know considering how badly these things fit in the housing the bolts are barely needed after a year or two! ha

Corrosion just holds them in anyway doesn't it?

Cheers guys. I thought 'tight' would be fine was just double checking since this is the first time I've done anything like this
