Head gasket?

   Wondering if I may have a possible head gasket failure on the vtr as it has a few problems that I can't seem to resolve, ok so it's rough running and rough idle and very unresponsive, I've noticed aswell the temp gauge inside the car seems to fluctuate quite a lot and for alot of the time whilst driving it's only just above the lowest point which doesn't seem right, it comes upto halfway if I'm sitting in traffic but only after a very long time also I'm not sure if it's losing a small amount of coolant, also noticed if I put my hand over the exhaust it feels a bit damp again not sure if normal?

   Head gasket can fail in a few ways,with the car cold & the rad cap off can you smell petrol in the coolant?

   Coolant smells ok as far as I can tell

   Dye test at the garage,if that's ok then get the cooling system pressure tested.
