cambelt problems

broke down just outside York yesterday....AA man gave me a tow in to a garage on the outskirts of the city after he had examined my Saxo and he diagnosed it was probably the cambelt that was gone....mechanic at the garage said he would need to examine it first but couldn't do it till Monday but was optimistic that if it was the cambelt and that I had stopped as soon as I heard the first grinding noise he was hoping there wasn't much damage to the engine...
I'm no mechanic but as I've had a cambelt go on me before in another car and I ended up having to scrap it because it was madly expensive to repair...can someone shed some light on what it might cost me to have the vehicle repaired should said cambelt be goosed....cheers in advance

On an interference fit belt which the saxo has fitted it's likely that valve damage has ocurred. So a new engine would be cheaper, you might be lucky though see what the garage says first.

If you switched the engine of when you heard the grinding it should be ok it will more than likeky be the timung belt tensioner or the water pump bearing gone bad which is pretty easy to fix.
However if the timing belt has slipped or snapped a new engine might be cheaper.
