Struggling with the gears

  1. #1
This afternoon, just driving along, went to put it into second, was really hard to put it into 2nd gear.
I'm sort of having to match the gears with the engine revs.
With the engine running sat at the lights, it's really hard to put it into first, like putting my foot fully down on the clutch is doing nothing.

Gear changes are just really hard.
Whats the craic folks? Help please.

Clutch gone? Something obstructing the gear linkages? Gear linkages come off or broken?
Have a look for anything you can see in the engine bay and if not go from there id say!

Whats it like with the engine off?
Check the condition of all the linkages

Update. With the engine off, it drops into the gears like normal.
With the engine running though same problem. Sounds like a tiny bit of spinning/grinding when changing down gears.

probably pressure plate springs are going or if its got a cable for the clutch, that may need adjusting. from experience (worked in a clutch and gearbox garage, specialized in it) it usually ends up as having a new clutch, but try the cable first, a few "technical spacers" on the release arm might disengage the clutch further and it might be back to normal, if not, then suspect the clutch itself, i find the clutch fingers are a culprit a lot of the time

The clutch itself has quite a bit of life in it ( had it off a few months ago looks healthy)
Clutch cable you say? I may have a tinkle with that.
Changing up gears, it just won't fall into gear, and changing down gears it just sounds like the plates spinning or you've missed the gear.

How tight do you want the clutch cable?

well that certainly points you towards the clutch actuation then is the biting point of the clutch quite low? usually that points towards it needing adjustment, if so easy fix. you dont want it tight per se, you just want to take all the slack out of it, just like the throttle cable, you dont want it constantly holding pressure, if its too tight it will keep the thrust bearing on the clutch and it will explode or seize resulting in a side of the road case unless your good at rev matching lol

Ahh, this may be the problem solution then. I did notice the cable was rather, slack/drooping. It's definatly not snapped, so i'll have a play now and report back.

Update on this. Cable was fine, but I had my good friend have a play with my car and he's diagnosed the case as the: clutch on its way out. Joyus. How much yolks usually charge for a new clutch fitting etc?

do it yourself with a few mates to help you. Its not a 5 minute job but its not actually that bad (if a little messy if you spill a bit of box oil)

Its the time and facilities thats available to me are whats holding me back. I have none of my tools with me or bits nd bobs.

I reckon maybe £150 to swap it in then plus parts

Mrclutch auto centres want 180 all in, mates rates start from 60£ if i provide all the gear
