Hi, my box started whining yesterday randomly, it's only when on the throttle and the pitch changes when going up gears, for example 4th it's one pitch change to fifth and it's a higher pitch even at same speed, come off throttle or depress clutch and it's gone, the whine goes with the engine speed aswell, gets higher pitch, at slow speed sounds kinda like a rotational knock, sort of walking pace any more it's a whine, goes into all gears fine no problems, any ideas? Literally just started yesterday no previous noise at all, 1997 GTi
Gearbox whining

#2Just found split cv joints on each shaft, brands hatch killed them, would this explain it or would it be the box, like I said noise goes when clutch is pressed or off the throttle
-
#3That will be the input shaft bearing check the oil level in the gearbox.
-
#4And maybe the diff bearings.
-
#5Should a top up of gear oil solve this? Or is it fubar? When coming down the gears aswell and slowly lifting up the clutch you can hear the noise, but drive and come come off the throttle it stops, sounds almost like the feedback you get through stereos when the suppressor goes

#6Depends how long it's been used for you might be lucky as it's recently started i would drain the box and renew the oil but use citreon bv 75w 80 (aka total bv75w 80) £16.20 from the dealers don't be temped to use any other oil even if the manurfacters claim it's suitable.

#7Check the gearbox for leaks first.Quote:Depends how long it's been used for you might be lucky as it's recently started i would drain the box and renew the oil but use citreon bv 75w 80 (aka total bv75w 80) £16.20 from the dealers don't be temped to use any other oil even if the manurfacters claim it's suitable.

#8I did hear it yesterday faintly, drove quite a large amount yesterday if I'm honest, wasn't until coming home last night it got loud enough to clearly hear it
-
#9Check the gearbox oil level and inspect it for leaks and for peace of mind change the oil to the citreon (total) bv75w 80
-
#10sounds like the bearings the gears themselves run on, renault traffic pk6 boxes have a habbit of that, if not, diff, i have noticed in 5th mine whines a bit...
-
#11I think it may be diff related, as it has quite lot of backlash from the diff when coming back on the throttle, whips the car quite hard
-
#12change the oil, cant hurt
-
#14Changing oil may help short term and maybe a transmission treatment additive but they only ever get worse when they whine really...
Mine is doing the same again now and on borrowed time, time for another rebuild
