Airlock?

    Morning people,

Just had the waterpump and cambelt changed on friday along with the antifreeze.

I am correct in thinking that the left side dial on the VTS is the water temp and oil temp is on the right?

Anyway, water temp is fluctuating while driving, this has me thinking that there is air still in the system?

Heaters seemed to be going hot and cold as well.

Oil temp never seems to go above half way but water is going high and low.

Havent had it set the warning light off yet.

Is it the overheating of oil that will cause headgasket failure or water?

any other problems i should watch for?

    cheers

Overheating of water will cause head gasket failure, run the car up to temperature say for 10mins switch off then open up the bleed nipple at the back left hand side of the engine.Do it slowly a bit of air is to be expected but if the nipple shoots off into the air(like mine did)then there is an air lock.Leave the nipple off for a few mins carefully open up the rad cap a bit at a time & remove and check the coolant level(top up if needed & replace the bleed nipple.Doing this on mine sorted the problem.

Awful... i thought it was just oil that caused headgasket failure.

Is it a case of if it goes into the red the gasket will fail?

or would it need to be prolonged exposure to the hot water?

It hasnt reached the red yet but has been close.

Nope unfortunately not,my cooling system seeped coolant from the water jacket at the back of the engine it slowly killed the hg.

    So its not immediate failure.

Sort of glad the cold weathers coming back then! Think its just an airlock. garage is going to have a look at it for me.

So if it stays out of the red should i worry about it failing?

And if it does enter the red will it instantly go?

It's not immediately failing no & if it enters the red providing you switch off straight away you'll be fine.I think you're worrying unecessarily in all probably your cooling system is air locked mate.

    Ok mate,

Just not very clued up on the system and needed some reassurance from someone with the knowledge!
