VTS conversion fan issue

  1. #1
So, sorted my bleeding issue, thanks to some of the guys on here.

Now, my fans are not coming on so the engine still gets close to overheating. Currently have twin fans, all wired up correctly. I have had them plugged in and i'm getting the correct voltage to the fans and I have also had the fans off and test run them and they run fine.

I ran the MK2 set up before in my VTR which didn't have the radiator sensor like my current set up has. I have used 2 different sensors in the radiator now and they still don't kick in?

For reference the fan loom has:

    1 Earth
    1 radiator sensor plug
1 red wire going straight into a 30amp fuse which is not blown.

Where is my issue? Last thing left to do on the car before MOT!

Intrigued at this question. Had the same problem on my old GTi, never found out the problem though, had an Auto electrician check the car over and eventually had to install a switch. Burnt out two fans in the end before the engine shat itself.

Thats my last resort but I really don't fancy having to manually turn the fans on all the time!

Doesn't the fan run off a relay? Check that

Tested the relay, fans work fine when wired up to a battery.

    Failing that temp sensors

    Bump!!

put a switch or piece of wire to bridge it in place of the resistance switch/sensor that sits in the rad. if it works when you flip it or put it in, you know its the sensor

Earth fan to bonnet catch run a live steight from battery just disconnect battery on a night job done /thread

Or run an mk1 fan set up with the fan switch in the rad, hook fans up to that, live from fuse box and earth behind headlight, works a treat and never failed for me

The overheatings obviously because you can't bleed the system properly due to the fan not working.

Garage had this problem on mine as the relay was corroded. They just installed a switch and it's now sorted. Only ever have to turn the fan on when sitting in traffic. Which is never...

Ill give this a go. Been through 2 switches so far so I'd hope its not the switch.

    Bugging me now!!

Anybody got a photo of a mk1 vts fan wiring loom?

Thats the set up I'm running.

then it cant not run, as soon as the fan switch gets upto tempratue it'll complete the circuit and it would run

as in sack off the standard loom, make the wiring your self

also have you tested the rad sensors that youve replaced to make sure they work 100%?

Mk1 direct to the fuse box!

Mk2 with all the earths and loom plug

I haven't tested them, their opening point is just under 100 degrees and by the time I have poured the boiled water into the cup and got the multimeter on it I'm below 100 degrees so i'm struggling to test the switch.

I think I am going to re-bleed the rad (thinking maybe a airlock might be stopping the sensor get to the correct temperature) and double check all my fuses. No reason for it to not work though, can't make sense of it at all.

why not get someone to pour the water into the cup while youve got the multimeter on it?

Yeah make your own circuit with a relay it's what I did. Test the resistance of the switch in situ when hot

    Plan for tomorrow:

    Get a new rad sensor
    Re-bleed all of the rad.
Have a good look at all the wiring again
Check all the cooling related fuses again
Replace the current Vtr engine bay fusebox with the VTS fusebox.

Fingers crossed that should sort my issue, if not, they will be wired up to a switch!

if it still fails dude and the fan switch works as it should just make a little circuit with the fan switch like i mentioned earlier on rather than having a switch in the car

Perfect, cheers pal. Suppose you only need it in traffic anyway.
