Temperature gauge issue

I've got a problem with the temp gauge in the vtr. I've replaced both sensors on the thermostat housing and bled the system and all pipes are hit and engine runs fine. The trouble is the temperature gauge don't move.

If I take off the Ecu sensor on the top of the thermostat housing the gauge moves up, the light comes on and the fan comes on. One I plug it back in though it all goes off and the temp gauge goes to the bottom again.

I've driven it around for about 15 minutes so I know the engine is hot but temp gauge still says nothing. Is there anyway to test for a fault in the wiring?

did you bleed the stat housing? there are 3 bleed points.

It's obvious the wiring and sensors are okay if the gauge moves to the max when you unplug the sensor. I can only assume there's still air in there.

no i didn't but i did bleed the matrix and the top of the rad and both are flowing water lovely. its weird though as water must be going through the system as all pipes are hot.

Yes, but if you don't bleed the stat housing, an air pocket sits in there. the sensor is at the top of the housing.

If no coolant touches the sensor, it'll never give you a reading.

i think getting confused now then as i thought the sensor in the side of the block under the air box controlled the gauge and the one on the top of the stat housing controlled the ECU?

It's a bit more complex than that on 3 plug models.

Bleed the stat housing first, and go from there.
