Battery issue?

Hi i have a desire recently put a vtr in it. I bought a battery from a friend it was in his golf, the battery had a higher starting amperage than the one I had originally so I thought it would be ok. And it worked for a bit but now every morning it won't start, within 5 minutes of turning the engine off it won't start again, I can bump start it easily and all the interior lights and stereo still work as normal until I try to crank it and then its like the battery gives up on life.
Before I go out and by a proper battery I just want to make sure it's not something else.
It has 12.4V normally. With engine on 14 ish so alternator is surely working?
I have left the battery unplugged from the car all night just after turning the engine off and then next morning still nothing.
The battery has 12v and it still can't energize the starter.
If it is anything else such as starter or alternator are they the same for the 1.1 and can I just swap them for my old ones

Oh and is 420 the right cranking amperage? Currently in there is 460

    Potentially.

Does it even try to crank or do you just get a clicking sound?

Are the battery terminals connected correctly and firmly. Sometimes the simplest things get overlooked, I chased an earth issue on my car and the actual terminal for the negative lead wasn't tight.

Also it's possible that your alternator is faulty & draining the battery.

I had it that when my alternator went, it would drain the battery very quickly!
    Could be battery or alternator.
Check voltage across the battery and if it's ok then battery is fine! Another way is, as soon as you get home from wherever, disconnect the battery, then in the morning reconnect it and see if it starts. If it does, it's alternator draining it, if not then battery is discharging itself and needs replacing

Try starting it and see what the voltage drops to
