Fuel Pump/Starting Problem Please Help

So yesterday, my car was fine, did a 30 something mile journey last night, all was well... This evening, started the car and there was a very strange noise, but it was intermittent then kinda stopped so I decided to take it round the block to see if I could hear any more of the noise.. Bad idea, as no sooner had I turned out of my road the car started like chugging and going fast slow fast slow even though I was doing a steady speed. Turned round in a nearby road and it completely died. Trying to start it, there was just no noise whatsoever. Anyway, I had to admit defeat and call the AA who said :

Not Idle Control Valve, Not crankshaft sensor; these were working fine. The car started using Easy Start then just died again.

What is it likely to be, and any estimates on costs to fix it? As I say it was fine yesterday however I realise sometimes things like Fuel pump etc can come on slowly then suddenly go. Is it likely to be the Wiring/Relay or the Fuel Pump. Its kind of old and I don't want to shell out garage repair prices plus towing for something that's not worth it and could end up costing both arms and a leg, many thanks.

You said you tried to start it again after it died, did it prime/crank at all? You have fuel yes?

easy way to check if your getting fuel is take off the fuel rail pipe and put a bottle over it and see if fuel comes out when you crank it

AA guy did that, no fuel came out... sorry i'm a girl who's terrible with cars When he put the Easy start on it was the only time I got any engine starting noises - before, it was just dead, there was just nothing but it trying to start... I have fuel in the car yeah, nearly a full tank, Thanks

Ok, next things to try (cheap things to try) fuel pump relay may be faulty, located under the ecu tray, push the fuel cut off button located on the right hand side of the bay (big red button), also worth bench testing the fuel pump to see if it's getting power

Thanks for the advice , I'm gonna try that + possible wiring issues with fingers tightly crossed as I'd have to tow it to a garage to even get the fuel pump done, is there any other things it could be aside from Fuel pump itself, relay or wiring/power supply? Thanks again very much

Fuel filter??? Take the back end of the filter off (the end nearest the back of the car) should be a good flow when you prime your car. (after the normal leakage that flows out when you dis-connect the pipe. It may seem like a lot, but it's probs only about 30p's worth :,)

fuel filter, take it off blow through it, and see if she starts if soo you need a new one.
