  1. #1
Hi all, As the title suggests, does anyone know a reliable garage/mechanic to take a look at my car to give it a once over and tell me whats up etc, been to loads but all asking rediculous amounts to service her. I had 1 i used to go to but he moved and he was spot on.

    Cheers

How much are they wanting for a service?

What is wrong with the car? Post up what problems you have in the correct section (or have search) and I can guarantee someone else will have had the same problem. Even if you didn't want to do the work yourself, at least knowledgeable people on here can diagnose it - then you know what needs doing and how much it should cost to avoid being ripped off.

Anybody who's even slightly mechanically minded could help you service it mate, it's a simple old car.

im not too bad myself and tried everything to find the problem but cant seem to locate it, Ive posted it on here and engines problems but no one replied

Its a strange noise coming from the engine, like a tapping, sounds like a tractor when i accelerate, its not as loud when its idle, ive tappets, spark plugs, about to change oil and filter, nothing is loose or banging around there are no leaks, nothing rubbing on the wheels etc.

A service from one guy was over 300 quid just for a service and another was closer to 400 so i said mmm no thanks

Ive searched on here if anyone has had similar problem but cant find anything

If I was you I'd buy all the parts myself then go back and ask how much a service would be.

If I get my car serviced I always buy the parts i.e. filters, plugs, oil etc. so the mechanic can't add on crazy prices.

Seems a bit steep to be fair, I got my car serviced / stamped for £70 so £400 is crazy lol

ive got all the parts that i need for now, just got new drilled discs and pads coming and some new leads coming to but id rather do it myself mate then get someone to do it for me at least i know whats happened

It's hard to find a decent mechanic now-of-days which is pretty shit to be fair. If you can fit the stuff yourself then by all means do so as it'll save yuo a few pound.

i would if i knew what the problem is, ive fitted all the bits i said up a bit but its still not fixed the sound, it sounds like a tractor on railway tracks when i accelerate plus a little power is gone and reaction time from when you put your foot down to actually moving is slower too

The way I look at it is if you can't get cheaper that £300 then you'd been better of putting a 16V lump into it.

Probably be around the same price but better power

    really? for 300 quid?

Yes I couldn't see it being much dearer than that to be honest. I was offered a VTS engine for £125 last year. Have a shop around I'm sure you could pick one up for cheap enough.

When I had the tapping sound in engine it was because garage replaced gasket and bent the tray on the inside soon drove back and had it fixed
