16v won't start....

  1. #1
    ok guys...

basically, i have been having afew problems with my xsi 16v conversion.
i had starting and idling problems...
so today i have changed the starter motor for a brand new replacement.

I have come to start the car, and all i hear 90% of the time is the starter clicking..... the car did turn over afew times but still failed to start.

i have also noticed that since fitting this starter motor, i cannot hear the fuel pump prime??

also once i jacked it up, i noticed that my crank sensor was loose! so i tightened that up.....

Any ideas why it wont turn over? i presume its the starter motor as it is not actually turning the engine over?
but it is puzzling me to why i cannot hear the fuel pump prime either...?

    any ideas lads?

    Thanks in advance guys

Any possibility that you have wire/s on in the wrong order?

    On the starter?

I'm 99% cetrain they are correct as the 2 wires are 2 completely different sizes.

any ideas why i cannot hear the fuel pump prime?

I have checked the battery and it isn't flat...

anything to do with the crank sensor??

    cheers Steve

Crank sensor would only stop it from sparking dude, have you checked to see if the fuel relay clicks when ignition is turned on mate?

    UPDATE!!

ok... I've cleaned up the old starter solenoid and put the old starter on and now it turns over, but doesn't start!

I still cannot hear the fuel pump prime, and there is no voltage at the pump when ignition is turned on. So I'm guessing it's a wiring fault.

    All fuses are fine...
I can hear the brown relay under the ecu click (could this still be faulty even though it clicks??)

    Any other ideas guys???

Take the brown relay out clean up the contacts and put back in.

Will give that a go tomorrow cheers!

    wont help.

check you have permanent live to appropriate pins on relay, then check for switched live.

    check inertia switch.
  9. #9
Swapped the relay for a used replacement one and still no joy? starting to give up on this car...nothing but trouble
  10. #10
check inertia switch as in above post it can be as simple as resetting it.
  11. #11
have you got fuel in car David you know what your gauge is like, check that you have fuel coming to the fuel rail, if so check that you have a spark, if you dont have fuel then check continuity on the fuel pump wiring, in sections to rule out sections of wire that is not broken, ideally you need a wiring diagram or a Haynes manual

    also check your earths

    check inertia switch.
    How do you know?

could it be an immobiliser issue, that stops the pump working, is the key light on the dash?
  14. #14
when the ignition is on.. the engine management light is on..... but iirc it was like that before... and goes off when the car is started??? i could be wrong??

    bit more of an update.....
wired the pump up direct to the battery , and the pumps does prime so it isnt a faulty pump...

there is voltage at the connector to where the relay connects......

how can i tell if i have an immobiliser issue? what will be the symptoms??
could it be an ECU fault????

    Update:

Just tested the coilpack and it seems like there is no voltage getting there.
    What would cause this???
    Ecu locked??
Or are there anything else that could affect it?

Still cannot hear the fuel pump prime though :/
  16. #16
Crank sensor sends a signal to the coil pack,so that's where i'd be looking.

Allready had a quick look at the crank sensor, and it looks fine. Is there any way of testing it? Should there be a voltage down there?
  18. #18
Unbolt the sensor give it a wipe over, put back on check the wiring to it as well.
  19. #19
no volts at the coil with ignition on means a wiring problem as its an ignition switched live via the relay.
  20. #20
im having the same problem mate!

i got no fuel pump, no power at the coilpack..

ive checked every relay they all having power and sending power back out.

the relay under ecu i got live on pin 12 and 14 with or without ignition on.

when i put tester on my immobiliser it just flashing with 11.5 volts (witch i think it means immobiliser is stuck on?)

if you have any joy let me know.. my car was running before i took loom off and ecu off to paint bay lol.
  21. #21
Did you disconnect the loom from the ecu without first pulling out the immobiliser box with the engine running? If you did then you've locked the ecu.
  22. #22
    didnt touch the immobiliser box?

but before when i rebuild the engine ive had the loom and ecu off the car put it back on and it run:/

is there anyway around the immobiliser?
  23. #23
I haven't disconnected the loom. Only replaced the starter motor.

My car has an aftermarket clifford alarm fitted. Has been dodgy for awhile but still alarms and disarms fine.

Crank sensor seems okay... just abit baffled what to do next
  24. #24
sounds like an immobiliser but i would of thought the key light would be flashing, you could try removing the immobiliser and seeing if that helps, also check your earths, gearbox earths have been know to stop the engine firing up if they are dodgy
  25. #25
If you break, dibs on the morettes
  26. #26
There is no key light.. jist battery.light as normal... no other lights illuminate? ?? Battery is fully charged though and turns engine over.

I have also check the gearbox earth and it's fine. I even temporary connected a jump lead between the gearbox ad chassis but till no joy

Gonna try a different crank sensor and go from there..

I really don't wanna break, but I have had ALOT of interest in the morettes allready! Haha
  27. #27
Car is off the road now so I've got.plenty of time to look into it

    Update:

    Need some advice lads....

Just for piece of.mind, I bought a brand new bosch crank sensor, fitted it but it's still the same.

    - there is 12v at the connector plug for the fuel pump relay... but the.pump doesn't prime...

    - There is no voltage at the coilpack with ignition on and when turning over

    - battery is fully charged.

    - tried a new fuel pump relay still no joy

Am I looking towards the ECU????
    locked itself maybe???

As stated, the cat still turns over
  29. #29
    Any input on this ??

Debated whether to buy an unlocked ecu to try..
  30. #30
    No one got any input??

i will be ordering an unlocked ecu in the next few days to try if not...
