Slipping clutch or gearbox failing?

  1. #1
Currently have a 5 paddle cg motorsport clutch in, it's done maybe 500 miles, gearbox however has unknown mileage and is hollowing on the overrun, my question is though can the gearbox be the cause of the problem?

Around 4k rpm the revs jump up with no acceleration unless i'm light with the throttle, I've tried the test where you put it in 5th at a low speed, and the revs don't rise fast.

Try engaging third and lifting clutch, if it doesnt stall and revs, the clutch is slipping.

Else.. Maybe Gearbox? Can probs get a recon for not too much, when was the last time you dropped oil & stuff also? Worth checking if you can.

Yeah this. Put it in third or fourth, put the handbrake on. Try to pull away. If the clutch comes all the time way up it's fucked. If if stalls or pulls away then its fine.

Check for any oil leaks,as sometimes a slipping clutch is caused by oil contaminating the clutch.

No oil leaks coming from anything just tried the test putting it in 3rd and 4th, hand brake on, lift the clutch didn't rev, stalled, either way, i'm taking my box off for a vts one

Oh well you can have a look at the clutch when its out then. Put a 1.1 box on. Quicker acceleration but it'll last about 2 months haha

Be interested to see what this is. Mine's standard but is doing the exact same thing. Had a new clucth a month or 2 back and has been spot on until a week ago. Only sometimes slips in 4th/5th. The cable is auto adjusting so its been reset and its still doing it ...

If your synchromesh were worn you would get this problem being a constant mesh but it would also move out of gear on the gearstick so its unlikely to be gearbox I would adjust the clutch then do a visual inspection

It never pops out of gear, but there is a lot of play in the gearstick, can also hear the gearbox making funky noises, for peace of mind I'm ripping the box off asap finding it quite difficult to find a vts box though, that's local anyway.

I found it very common for the gear stick to have play got the same on mine and few others I've worked on the reason for this is where the gear selector rods connect to the gearbox there's is a pin that wears away inside that's what causes the play in the gear stick it's an fairly straight forward fix you can purchase the part through a main dealer

The pin is 90p I bought one this week
